I saw on the historical aerials site that the Beltway railroad once ran right through Midway airport. I'm sure you guys already knew that, I remember my uncle telling me that as a kid. I would have loved to see that in person! Picture and some info here: http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?op=thread&id=81

I found this on Wikipedia; The line was used for both passenger and freight trains and served several local industrial businesses, including a Schwinn Bicycle Company warehouse. The Bloomingdale Line was primarily used to reach the Lakewood Branch and industrial district on Goose Island.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomingdale_Line It mentions Schwinn but no others. this site has a little mo

I've tried to find an answer and I've also come up with zero. there also was some type on yard or something at Damen Ave, they built condos almost on top of the tracks! From what I found Canadian Pacific has those tracks as "out of service" and not abandoned, on some blog I read that their police dept still patrols the right-of-way.

Thank you Elaine W, that explains why the street I grew up on used to be Humboldt st and was changed to Richmond St. I had noticed that on old maps of the city, I guess since there was all ready a Humboldt Blvd they made the change.

Artista, you bring back some memories, as kids we used to go to the Patio often. Even though the Commodore/Olympia was closer to our house, it was closed most of the time! Thanks for the pics.

HOLTANEK: My memory of this place is only when we cut through to avoid traffic on the Dan Ryan back in the early 80's. My dad got off near Garfield blvd then down MLK Dr to get to the Bishop Ford. I recall alot of empty lots and abandoned buildings.

I took a look on Google maps, and wow. This place is a urban waste land. About the same way I remember it. It's depressing to see a once vibrant place go to hell like that. I was reading on Sun times.com that Carol Moseley Braun has a 1.9 million house for sale just across Washington Park. what a difference a few blocks make!

I know for most of you that still live in Chicago it's probably not a big deal, but for those of us that don't, I'm excited to see this show. I hope it does well, looks like from the previews (since it's a cop show) that there are going to be lots of outdoor shots. I'm going to keep an eye out and see how many places I can recognize. I'm glad they are going to make it with authentic looking Chicag

Very cool pics, it's sad to see a neighborhood go like that. There's a old post around here that captain54 put up with a before/after pic on 63rd similar to yours. BTW I saw your post just now on how to post a pic, here's how you do it so it will show with your post: what you do is hit the Flickr button (blue/red dot) where you type in your posts. the first time you do it, it will ask if you w

That's it! 5400 S. Western, I was thinking it was 4000-4900. The name does not ring a bell, Did it change in the early 80's? Boy the mind is rusty!

Very cool wayoutwardell, try purchasing a car now a days with 2 dollars down. There was a Ford dealership on the corner of W Irving Park and N Hoyne, I don't think it had a outdoor lot, I'm pretty sure it was all in doors. Does any one know what it was? It looks like by Google maps the building is still there. I also remember a dealership that advertised on S Western, I'm thinking it was around t

Thanks for the info SuperCFL, I was looking at historical aerials. You can see the rail yard in the old pics, and I was wondering what railroad owned the yard.

I was looking at the historic aerials web site, and noticed Addams Park was built after 1952 from the CPD web site: Addams Park History In the late 1940s, Addams Park's Near West Side neighborhood was decaying and congested. The Chicago Park District established the much-needed park in 1946, part of a ten-year plan to increase recreational opportunities in under-served neighborhoods after Wor

Well, look what happened to Maxwell St. At least that was developed, but it seems once they put their eyes on something. They will get it by hook or crook.
