Now that I've looked in google maps aerial view, man that is heart braking the whole area looks like a ghost town, just vacant lots. Too bad the only time you hear about Englewood this day and age is when someone gets killed there. but I think Chicago has done a decent job of bringing back some of its neighborhoods, it could be a lot worse just look at Detroit. Looks like that laundry-cleaners

Wow! What a difference, I'm not real familiar with that part of town. I wonder what caused such a drastic change? That's definitely very intresting.

I talked to my father he moved to Chicago in the mid 40's. He remembers riding this line, the stock yards line, and the Humboldt Park branch.

Passenger service was abandoned in 1957, freight stopped in the early 80's. That picture with the bricked up doorways was the entrance to the station above. It seems the bridge over the Dan Ryan is still in place, that once connected the Kenwood line to the tracks to the West. The bridges at Federal and Dearborn may still be there.

Thanks! captain, that makes perfect sense, explains why newer buildings did not have them. The building we lived in was constructed in 1922. It also had a similar door in the basement, for coal delivery. I still remember the coal truck using it till about 1974 or 75 when they put in a gas furnace.

Does anybody know what these doors were used for? The doors were about waist high off the ground about 4' wide x 3' tall and went out to the rear porch. Our building had them. 1 for each apartment, and several buildings in our neighborhood had them. The one in our apartment was painted over so many times that you could not open it.

I remember a factory on the South side of Irving park at the Chicago River, I no longer live in Chicago, but looks like a bunch of apartments or condos have been built there. According to www.newschicago.org it was called Bush Boake Allen INC. Our old landlord told me there was a bunch of factories all along the North branch of the Chicago River back in the early 1900s.
