OK, I see it now. Part of the ghost house was in what is now the middle of the street, and the garage part is partly under the new house. Got it! We had a "ghost" house in our neighborhood, it still was fully furnished, but someone had ransacked it. The calenders in the place had the date of July 1971, and it was 1982! We called it a ghost house because it was abandoned, but we never sa

Thanks for posting the historic aerials Bruce, that cleared up a lot. The sub-division on Graystone Ct is were the ghost used to be, I just thought the ghost house was closer to the road, but it was way back. It looks like one of the houses is almost in the same spot as the old house: <iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marg

I remember the milk man, he delivered milk in the glass bottles, that was in the early 70's. And of course the good humor truck. Those were the times!

Wow! That thing is huge. I would hate to think the devastation they would cause if one blew up.

We ate at that White castle the last time I was in Chicago, for my aunt's wake at Fortuna funeral home. I remember a liquor store and a tavern across the street.

Ours was just like b.a.hoarder describes, it was in the rear of the building off to the side. As a matter of fact the lid on ours broke when someone threw a heavy object off the 3rd floor porch. I remember ours had a clog one time, and the plumber came out to fix it. The pit was six feet deep, and I recall him pulling out large chunks of mustard yellow-black play-dough looking stuff. The plumber c

That is strange, our building had one (built in 1922) but did not have that extension. Like bwalsh I also don't recall seeing one like that.

That pic of the corner of Grand and Oak Park is amazing, It was literally "out in the country". Now I know why they called the Dunning Hospital the country farm, I assuming the view is west on Grand. here's it is today for those of us no longer in Chicago. <iframe width="562" height="314" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0&qu

very cool pics Artista, I just love those old buildings. And like Berwyn Frank I love late 50's and 60's cars. Two of my uncles had 59 Impalas, they were both 2 door hard tops. My dad had a 61 Ford Galaxie, later on my uncle that lived in pilsen had a 75 Buick Electra 225 2 door, those cars were like tanks!

Wow! It looks like it took out at least 3 or 4 buildings. Artista do you know how the fire started? From google maps it looks like it's still a vacant lot today.

That is an interesting theory captain, it is plausible that building was abandoned and ready for demolition. I would assume most of the buildings in that area had been bought or gone though eminent domain by then. That building does look like a police station especially sine it had 2 garage doors, a lot of the old police stations had two bays, one for a patrol car and one for an ambulance. But of
