that photo was more than likely taken from the roof of the 410 N Milwaukee building.. It has some Chicago and NW RR stone embossed logos etched at the top, so I'm assuming it was at some point a Chi and NW RR warehouse or freight storage type facility. It now the Pickens Kane building and house some other businesses... I've always been interested in the history of that building, but up until n

that section of Milwaukee was built to traverse the RR tracks, and when those tracks disappeared, the land was obtained for development and that stretch of Milwaukee became obsolete..I remember it being dismantled sometime in the 80's Missing section of Milwaukee Ave by captain54_01, on Flickr

According to The Encyclopedia of Chicago During World War II, Chicago's Civil Defense Agency designated the triangle bounded by North, Clark, and Ogden Avenues a neighborhood defense unit. The neighbors in this residential section of “North Town” continued their association after the war, sponsoring annual art fairs dubbed the “Old Town Holiday.” The name Old Town, evoking a cozy, neig

According to the Historic Aerials view, pretty much everything you've described vanished in the late 60's early 70's with the dismantling of Odgen.... and from what I can see, Terry's looks like it's not exactly on the spot of the gas station on the SW corner of Larrabee and North...Terry's is set back a ways, almost under the CTA tracks...and the gas station remained for a while after Ogden was t

The color photos from the 1950's on that site are simply amazing..... I really enjoyed the corner bars/taverns advertising on their windows..."TELEVISION" as a way to get people in the door.

"The Pool Hall" episode may have been based on any number of Chicago pool halls from the 60's. More than likely, a pool hall such as the one featured in that episode would have been on Van Buren, not Randolph. I always thought Randolph was a bit more of the upper end of the Loop at the time, with Henrici's and the Sherman House, Bismark, etc.. Maybe the writer thought Randolph sounded mo

Some info on the residents around Superior and Racine in 1929, Polk Directory Racine Ave listings 1929 Polk Directory Chicago by captain54_01, on Flickr Looks like the tavern on the SE corner of Superior and Racine may have been there in 1929. Spelled "Pawlak" @ 727 N Racine. Or maybe the Pawlak's lived in the building and opened a tavern later. Someone with a more updated dire

Current views of still standing structures...the Racine Police station would have been roughly up the embankment on the outbound ramp near where the cluster of small shrubs are. Surviving Kenn Expressway-North Racine-Huron by captain54_01, on Flickr

Interesting photos....Probably the corner of Dickens and Larrabee. The top photo is on the Cushman site listed as 1960, but judging from the autos I'd say late 1967-68.. I would also say that these building were just about ready to come down for the construction of the townhomes and OZ Park in the early 70's. You can sorta see some already cleared on the corner of NW Corner of Dickens and Larrabee

It's highly unlikely that 1418-20 W fulton sold for $45 K. That's a very high end rehab. $4.5 M is not unrealistic.. I remember that property very clearly going back to at least the mid 80's or so..The area at the time was a haven for prostitution and drug dealing..I remember seeing some very seedy characters in and out of and in the vicinity of that property. $181 K for that property in 9

the building directly north of the 160 Franklin building (162 N Franklin) has the same exact marble facade on the ground floor as the 160 building, so I'm thinking it's all one unit. And probably both erected in 1906. The 162 building escaped the goofy facade on its upper floors, so my guess is what you see on the upper floors of the 162 building is what's the original facade on the 160 building

You don't see too many of these around anymore, but I've always been amazed at the "modern" facades (50's-60's ?) slapped on early 20th century buildings. This building @ 160 N Franklin has a construction date of 1906..bizarre 160 N Franklin, Chicago...1950's - 60' facade on old building by captain54_01, on Flickr

View due north Devon/Broadway/Sheridan..judging by the vehicles and the bus, I'm gonna say 1953-1955 Devon - Broadway - Sheridan - early 50's by captain54_01, on Flickr My vivid recollections of the area are the old Xanadu nightclub @ Rosemont and Broadway in the 80's and, in the mid 70's, seeing Cheap Trick at a rock club/bar (name escapes me) in a small venue on Sheridan between the L

Not that this is related to your query, but I found some interesting info about another business located at one time at the intersection of Armitage and Larabee. This from an Electrical trade magazine in 1920: THE ABSOLUTE CON-TAC TOR COMPANY Chicago has moved its factory from 2003 2005 Larrabee Street to larger quarters at 4056 4058 Armitage Avenue The offices of the company remain at 127 N

The address comes up either 750 N Leavitt or 2200 W Superior, and either way, the 1928-29 Polk Directory shows that property as being vacant. However, the 1938 Historic Aerials shows a structure at that corner. So whatever was there was built in the 1930's. Looks like it disappeared between 2002-2005

There's also a sort of stick/antenna/pole protuding to the left of the smokestack in the 58' color photo, behind a chimney, as if it's almost coming out of a chimney. I'm almost positive that's a flag pole and its part of Siebens as well. I believe that Siebens' extended pretty far back west of Larabee, and I've seen turn of the century rough photos of Siebens, either the Larabee or old Clybourn p

Having lived in Lincoln Park in the early to mid 80's, I can remember that stretch of Halsted (Division to Halsted) being a very desolate, dangerous area. I can't really remember any commercial establishments starting to fill up those buildings until well into the 90's. The only reason to venture down that way would have been to go the Golden Ox and even that was dicey.
