Glady's had three locations...the 3700 block of S State, and 2 locations in the 4700 block of S Indiana...If your dad was there in 64', he was there just after they moved from the second location. The original owner died about 5 years ago, and shortly after the restaurant closed

the Milwaukee overpass from Fulton to Kinzie was built to accomodate the RR yards operating at ground level..As the freight yards came into disuse, so did the need for the overpass. Also, when the Kennedy Expressway was built, it provided a more convenient way to travel from the west loop to the north side. Couple that with the property values in the Fulton River District going for a premium begin

If there is anything that could possibly stand the test of time in this country, it should be those beautiful old churches that were built around the turn of the century, but even those are becoming extinct. It looks like St Boniface, at Chestnut and Noble is probably coming down. Vacant for 20 years, it was built around 1903. The tradition always was in this country that if a structure doesn'

View from California Ave, 1 block north of 95th St...the main entrance used to be at the left, where the new addition is, and ran all the way to 95th Street. Little Company of Mary made history in 1950 when it was the first hospital to perform an organ transplant, kidney. The most drastic change along the strip of 95th street that you mentioned is from California to Western, along the nor

I have a friend who lives in the McKinley Park Lofts at 2323 W Pershing..I asked about the history of the building and as far as they knew, the previous resident (before the conversion) was Desks, Inc., an office furniture manufacturer.. Upon further research, I learned the building was the home of Popeil Entreprises in the 60's and 70's. Popeil was the creator and inventor of "Vegamati

From what I remember the 1500 W Monroe building was a printing plant. Creative Card Co, a greeting card co. was there until not too long ago. With the dawning of the digital age, a lot of the smaller and mid size printers folded. As a residual effect, a lot of the pre press, color separators, binderies, etc, went under too. Chicago was at one time, the printing center of the US, if not the w

It would be great to somehow get a copy of that...great piece of info Really hard to imagination a major thoroughfare between Lake and Kinzie when you look at what is going up there now.. there could possibly be some film footage of the Fulton District that might show that missing stretch of roadway from any number of features that were shot in Chicago from the mid 70's to the late 80's....

The 325 N Jefferson Building still exists, today, as the Jefferson Tap and Grille. It looks like this is the only building still standing that once surrounded that missing stretch of Milwaukee Ave. The back half of the building is built at a 45 degree angle, which means that is was probaby erected around Milwaukee Ave and flush up against it, which would explain the "phantom side walk"

As late as 1988, half of it was still in existence, from Lake, half way to Kinzie. I have seen some views of the street being completely intact as late as 1973, so it's possible it could have remained intact into the 80's. A condo development was built on the corner of Fulton and Milwaukee in the late 80's that would have eliminated the last half of that roadway along that stretch... missing

The one memory of Chicago that will always live with me is the array of lighted bar and liquor store signs, with the blinking, sequential bulbs lighting up the night. These signs contribute so much to the character and charm of what makes Chicago the city that it is. It is my hope the owners of these establishments recognize this and try to keep these signs in repair. there is a classic exampl
