Thanks throwawaychild, I have been trying to remember the name of that orphanage for some time now. I dated a girl from there when I was in high school with her at Amundsen High in 1973. @ FranCarmen, I remember that being completely leveled when they tore down Chapin Hall. It was a vacant lot for a while. They probably salvaged part of the building when taking it down.

For anyone interested I also found this on Google. My uncle Bill Ahrends owned a Snack shop that was attached to pat’s bar in Chicago. When I was 6 years old I sat on his lap and drove the pace car he won at Ind

I only saw this one on Cinema Treasures http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/38390/photos/42662 Nothing on American Classic Images. Rich, I only found that one picture of The Palace on south Asland Ave. I checked Flickr but only saw the other Palace Theater downtown.

Ravenswood Pub 5455 North Ravenwood is another neighbor bar. I remember this place in the 70's when I lived here but under another name which I can't remember.

Just north of Devon on Newark (in the middle of the block) is a bar called Newark Nook. It was called McNally's when I lived there a while ago. Not far from here is another bar in the middle of the block is called Yacko's In Niles on 6636 W Albion Ave. That was called Babe's. Both of these bars been around for a very long time.

My father was a union baker and worked for Burny Bros. Bakery on 4600 West Chicago Avenue in the 1960's and 1970's until the close of the company. Here is a website showing the plant and the products they made. http://burnybros.blogspot.com/ Burny Bakers was the wholesale division of the bakery located in Northlake on North Avenue. Didn't the government step in and break up Beatrice Foo

Daveg, My friend Bob lived right behind Great America in 1995 and had a little creek (like 6 inches wide) run through his property. He was told once by someone that waterway was protected and not to be disturbed. It sounds like your creek.

I was in Dr. Jake's Bowling History blog and saw a lot of pictures of bowling alleys that closed along with bowlers themselves, but no G & L bowl Ron. I heard of it but that one of the houses that I didn't bowl in. I bowled mainly on the north side of Chicago.

Unless I miss it in this tread, was there any Kolhs Food stores around Chicago at any time? From what I read about Kolhs, they sold food first than became a department store. Is this correct?

Makes sense that it could be a National. They were closing up stores right about that time. By 1980 a trace could be found according to National Tea on the Encyclopedia of Chicago.

Darling Company also picked up used grease as well. I thought they merged with Torvac. You would not want to follow one of these trucks in summer. I hired these companies in the 90's to pump out basins for me at my job and pick up grease.

I rode my dirt bike down to the bottom of this quarry back in the day when it was a ski area. Around 1976. I never went skiing there because the 2 winters before they closed were too warm and no snow for skiing. Here is more info on Thunder Mountain on this website: Thunder Mountain in Chicago Posted by: Scottnchgo (---.coxfiber.net) Date: January 21, 2009 09:35AM

I remember Happy Foods opening up back in the 1980's, but I do not remember what was there. For some reason Treasure Island comes to mind.

Can anyone tell me where these restaurants were located? I can't remember anything about these places. I grew up and lived on the north and west side of Chicago and these places draw a blank to me. The 3 Bears, was that on Clark Street south of Devon Ave.

Thanks snappytom. That's the name of the restaurant I was trying to remember. What a hole in the wall place! I think it closed around 1978 with Cock Robin. Didn't Niles Village buy both properties?

You are right about a person walking along side of you on the horse. I remember that as well as going around in a circle. I don't quite remember where this took place though.
