At 6725 West Belmont, that was the Golden Fawn Banquet Hall. I remembered when it opened it was a nice hall. I went there a couple of times for weddings. I also remembered helping my mom carry groceries home in the wire shopping cart from the the store. The winters were the worst.

There was a National Food Store on Milwaukee Avenue, north of California Avenue on the south side of the street. Right across the street from Max Gerber Plumbing Supply which I believe is now gone. The National Food building is still there and operating as Dearborn Wholesale Foods now.

The VFW closed it doors in the early 1990's I think. The few remaining members merged with another VFW in DesPlaines I believe. We can not forget about Blazes bar down the street on Milwaukee!

I remember the Cock Robin ice cream store on the corner of Milwaukee and Albion, and a restaurant across the street. I also remember the VFW club and Slingerland drums, it was on Milwaukee as well. I am trying to check with Niles Historical Society to see if they have any early pictures of this area.

That seem to be in a lot of places around Chicago about the traffic lights. By Rosehill Cemetery, on the south side on Bowmanville Ave. they used to race there as well in the mid 70's. That was also a popular spot for abandon autos as well.

Kchi, I remember businesses being in those triangles of property in the middle of the intersections around the early 70's. I believe it was for windows and siding. I always wondered how people would go there with no parking.

Thanks Kchi, I could not remember the name of that place. I knew there was a show there as well. Now where was the Holiday Ballroom? Is that where Jefferson Park bus terminal is now?

I thought the Holiday Ballroom was at Pulaski and Milwaukee where the CVS is now? If not, what was there and what was the name of the place? From what I remember the building took up the whole corner. It was a large red brick building.

Some more info on that old train line. Here is a link to a Chicago Tribune story on 2/7/12 about that old line. Also, if you do some web searching, there are numerous other photos of the abandoned route from farther south. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-north-suburban-bike-trail-20120207,0,5746573.story This was from greg j. I hope they finish the bike trail!

I worked as a fountain guy on the north side of Chicago and I don't remember making any Green River Cokes, although there was a person that asked for it on his Sundays.

WDH74-I never even thought of that. I wonder how many cars crashed drag racing on the streets? I just remembered my friend hit the viaduct on Ridge Ave. back in 1981 drag racing.

Here is picture I found of the Jensen Slides in Caldwell Woods before they were torn down. http://www.flickr.com/photos/chicagoextra/2147544328/sizes/z/in/photostream/ I went on toboggans but never at the forest preserves. Were they free or did you have to pay to use them? I was more of a down hill skier in the 70's.

I started at LaManna's at .75 per hour. When I left, I was at .95 per hour. He offered me more to stay, but I wanted to work at the Ace Hardware to learn something. Plus my friend Zig worked there and got me the job. I still have my old SS card as well and I had to use it a month ago. I am glad I keep it. We had a young flashy guy working there (Ace) that drove a newer purple Pontiac. Nice guy but

I know you won't believe this, I worked at LaManna's Drugs. It was 1968, part of 1969. I know I didn't work there long before I took the job at the Ace Hardware. Joe LaManna was mad at me for quiting, but Ace paid mimimun wage. Joe didn't. I went to 8th grade at St. Gregs but went to Amundsen High. Class of 73'. I don't remember Mark at the moment working at Ace. I know Ann and Lo owned it, there

In the mid 70's if you north on Western Ave. between Belmont Ave. and north to Montrose Ave. was car dealerships and used cars lots one after another. Don't forget to throw in a few motorcycle lots as well. The one used car lot that comes to mind was Rocket Motors. James Cann in the movie Thief burns up his used car dealership at the end of the movie.

I don't remember the races there, but I read about it on line this week about the Amphitheatre. I think I am a little to young for that. I am from the north side and in the mid 70's the hot spot to race was along the road just east of Lake Shore Drive at between Wilson Ave. and Foster Ave. Get there by 10:00 pm or you would have to park some where else to watch. The police just looked the other wa

I remember that loading dock. I moved enough bags of cement on to it from that old shed in the back. I also remember a old German Shepard dog that use to room around in the alley. I worked at the store from 1969 to 1973. When I moved to Irving and Nagle, I used to ride my bike everyday from home to school, Amundsen High, and then to Ace and back home. I lived at Winchester and Balmoral for a few y

Yes, I worked at the Ace Hardware, 5830 North Clark Street. Lowell and Ann owned the store. I use to walk accross the street and pick up lunch for them from the Round Table Resturant. The moving company, Econamy Movers was just to the south of the hardware store then the body shop. The alley was still gravel if I remember right. There was a bike shop right accross the street, on Clark Street but I

That bike was a Sears Huffy I bet! I think that was the brand they sold back then. The name came to me now, Auto Flywheel Welding. Than there was Red's Frame shop accross the street I believe. I lived at Balmoral and Winchester from 67 to 71. But I still hung around there after I moved. I worked for the Ace Hardware store and I didnt want to quit.
