Thanks wags300 for the info. I never heard of this place while living in the neighbor hood. The church and the the building that the bowling alley was in are still there. The church added a addition to there building just south of the church on Asland.

If you are talking about Clark Wilson Rec Center, 4533 N. Clark, I don't know when they closed. I have checked on another web site and no mention of it. I will get back to you on that date. The business there now, Bag Plaza Corp has been there since 1976.

Just a note, The women Ruth Ann Steinhagen who shot and nearly killed Eddie Waitkus, star first baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies, on June 14, 1949 at the Edgewater just past away this last December 29,2012. The incident is one of the inspirations for the 1952 baseball book The Natural, made into a film in 1984.

Another nice building along the lake is one of Loyola's University dorms at 1000 West Loyola. The east side of the building has some nice window views. Click on the street view to get a larger picture of the building. http://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=&q=1000+west+loyola,chicago&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x880fd109b04445f3:0xe8622195579e9e63,1000+W+Loyola+Ave,+Chicago,+IL+606

@Kchi, if you are talking about the Mars Theater, I grew in Logan Square in the 1960's and I never even knew until now that there was a theater there. I always went to the Logan or the Congress. I don't think that they were open as a theater at the time in the 60's. There use to be a lot of car dealers at that time there. Maybe it changed to another business.

The same thing happened to Timber Lanes on the north side during that winter of 79'. The roof fell in but did not take the walls down and the place reopened the next season. @Wags300, I bowled at Calo in the late 1960's to the mid 1970's. Robby was a great guy. No parking there closed him up. What a pain to try to find a spot.

The Buffalo on Irving Park Road and Pulaski Avenue is the one I remember. Then they moved to Morton Grove on Dempster Street sometime in the early 1980's. Being that I was a soda jerk at a drug store when I was in my teens, I had my share of ice cream and candy and I didn't go to these places to much.

I watched some baseball on channel 44. The White Soxs were on them back during the 1970's. In the 1983 channel 44 become ON TV? You had to use a scrambler to view the picture. The first pay for TV that I remembered. @Rich, the 700 Club is still on TV everyday on MY 50.

The Green Mill has been on Broadway since 1907. If you saw Thief with James Caan, they filmed a bar scene there. Pippin's on Rush Street has been there since 1949. The bartender, Marcy has been there over 25 years as well. I would imagine that all those small neighborhood bars has been around for a lot of years as well. There was one on my block on the north side of Chicago just two doors d

In the 1960's I used to skate on our side street in Logan Square. The street sometimes would become pure ice. In the 1970's, I also use to skate at the different Chicago Parks as well as the Rainbo Ice Rink.

Wasn't there some other horse stables in that area? I remember the Flying W for some reason? I know I went riding at Happy Days as well in the early 1970's.

@ mphansen, PKDickman is correct. The name of the orphanage is St. Hedwig's Orphanage Niles, IL. Here is a picture of it, http://www.idaillinois.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/posttest/id/1077/rec/2 The orphanage closed in 1960 and it became Niles College until 1995. Check out the Green River dispenser on the counter! That's how I use to make Green Rivers back in the day. You had to mix them up. The jug is just the syrup. http://www.flickr.com/photos/masmiguel/6880915935/in/set-72157631473844764

Michigan still have bottle refunds? It is like 10 cents per bottle, can, and plastic bottle and when you return them, you get your refund. This is suppose to keep recyclables out of the trash.

You are right murphman about the smell. Back in the mid 70's when I use to go Joes for lunch, I couldn't believe it as well. No parking for Joes either if I remember correctly. There was a scrap yard where the Green Dolphin is now on the corner of Asland and Webster. Also there was a Martins Gas Station on the north west corner of Asland and Armitage. A weird long lot along the tracks.

@ continentalbill3@yahoo.com, My friend knew the owner of Gladstone Bakery very well. His father in law were very good friends with the owner of the Gladsone Bakery. They grew up together as kids. From what I remember, he lived right upstairs from the bakery and did not have any kids to leave the business to. He also did not want to sell it to anyone. I think it has been closed for quite a few yea

@ Qlassique, The Jojo's on Devon and Lincoln is long gone. The only Jojo's buildings left remaining standing, as of a few years ago is at Harlem and Foster and Mannheim and United Parkway (Schiller Park) that I know of. These three Jojo's I use to go to all the time. Remember the fire places in the middle of the restaurant, then replaced by the aquariums? I like the waiting room with the big round
