The first car I drove was my Dads 1954 88 2Dr. Olds and then I took my drivers test on his 1960 98 Olds loaded. My first car that I bought was a 1962 Buick 2dr. Skylark. In my 54 years of driving I had approximately 21 cars. I'll have to leave that for another time in our discussion. I had many favorites in those 54 years.

Just alittle background (beloe) where I come from and the good old days of playing softball: Anyone remember the good old windy city 16 in softball games and parks? This has nothing to do with how long I had my number, however, my father in law gave me a series of plates dating back for every year dating back to the late 20's through the 90's. Some of the plates were made of cardboard in the 30's. Of course, I added my plates to the collection. Now you keep a plate for five years and update it with stickers.

Dunning wrote: One question for Swede: With a name like Swede, how did you get a job playing in a Polish Band? Swede was my nick name in grammer school. My dad was called Swede when he was growing up in the "Yards" It was because our last name was spelled Svid... being that we were Slovak my Dad/ Polish my Mom and I went to St Michaels a Slovak school, however, we then changed the

My Dads brother and his family went to St Roses until 1956, however, my Aunt from my Moms side stayed at St Roses until the 80's. I remember going to their carnivals. What was the clothing store across the street? I also remember the wedding store on the West side of the street. Marges I believe.

Rich, Good for you to be still playing. That's a great accomplisment. I took sax lessons for about 5-6 months from a sax player my dad knew from Town Club Tavern before it became RS Hideaway. He played with Little Wallys Polka Band. I don't play anymore, however, I still can remember parts of some songs like "I'm in the mood for love", Tequlia, Somewhere over the rainbow. I had a N

That's funny we had a 5 piece band in the 60's that played for many Polish weddings, anniversaries, school dances street parties. I played the sax and Kenny from the Yards played the accordian and we called our band The Royal Crests. We had a chance to play at the Lemon Lounge on Pulaski and 63rd street however, some of us were not legal age. The good old times.

Anyone here of Bass Lake in Knox, Indiana? We had a cottage there on the lake. We belonged to Rennals Ski Club back in the 70's. It was 90 miles East of Chicago. It was our vacation spot every weekend. Snowmobiling in the Winter.

Paradise Ballroom was owned by Monnos's Tap across the street from the Paradise. I went out with Beverly Monno in grammer school. I would walk her home and carry her books everyday. WOW I believe Sarna also owned a tavern. My buddy Kenny Rak who lived on 53rd and Winchester took accordian lessons from her. He would of been 70 now a few years after you.

How about the hobby shop on 47th North side of the street 2 blocks East and the greasy spoon chilli restraunt nextdoor. We would go there during recess and after school to buy airplane or boat models. We would go to the greasy spoon for chilli once a week if we could ditch going to lunch at the school convent.

Anyone remember the "SWAMPS" behind the ball fields on 47th & Damen. WE would go there during recess and build rafts. Sometimes we even stayed dry. If you know what I mean. Ha! Ha! Our nuns at St Michaels would be furious when we came back late or wet. Again that was the fun days.

Talking about real vacations when we were growing up in the 50's was going to Twin Lakes Wis. As a kid we thought it was a million miles away when it was only 90 miles over the Wisconsin boarder. My aunt had a cottage across the street from the lake. The whole family, aunts, uncles, dads, moms, cousins would go for two weeks. Sometimes the dads had to work and come back. One older cousin had a woo

Rich, I remember all those places. We loved Minoso's almost as much as Gertties. My folks would buy furniture from Brabecks 90 days as same as cash. Ha! Ha! You can't do that anywhere now. For Christmas Brabecks would have a grab bag area down in the basement. Do you remember the Kroger and the butcher shop east of Damen? How about Bransoms dress store or Damen Savings and Loan. I had a Christ
