Back in the 50's & 60's we went to every Auto Show, Rodeo, Dog Show and whatever. Stockyard Inn had the best steaks. My grandmother worked in the yards for Armour. Just about every friday when I was a kid we went to Drovers Bank and then went to the slaughter house. Went to St Michaels school. I remember the cattle trucks rolling in thru the city especially the smell.

Eric, Your right it was St Martini. I thought about after I left the note. Also, the church on 49th and Hoyne was a Russian Ortodox church and not a Greek Orthodox. A neighbor of ours was Russian and that was his church.

What was the church on 51st right before Ashland? Wasn't that a Orthdox church. It had two cross bars on the cross. Ther was a Greek Orthdox church probably on Hoyne and 49th.

When Binky told us about his brother losing his arm when the box car door slamed shut during a car switch it spooked us for awhile. Rich, did you say you got married in 1957? You must be 7 or 9 yrs older than me. I'm 70. My brother would have been 73. My older brother Roger and I

Luddite, The names Joe and Louise now bring back old memories. We were Slovak on my dads side and Polish on my moms. My dad passed away at 57, due to a heart attack, in 1970 and my mom passed at 85 due to cancer in 2001. The kids in the neighborhood waited all year for the church carnivals and the free fair, our hang out for the summers.

Mogee, You asked if anyone knew Peewee. Under the forum Rebels I stated I knew Peewee when we were growing up at Oakley Playground, however, I gave you the background on Stubbie and not Peewee. Stubbie was another one of our friends growing up. Peewee, like Stubbie was a good ball player, hung around with my older brother Roger. Peewee lived on the corner across from the playground. His mom,

This is a small world. I grew up at 2237 West 50th place and we moved in 1956. I can't remember the names of our neighbor at 2233, howver, they were a nice Polish couple and I always addressed them as Mr or Mrs. If they were your Great Uncle and Aunt they were very nice. They had a nice vegitable and flower garden. I always picked their flower and brought them home to my mom. When your little

We took our TV sets to Rex TV service. Our Ja Ja gave us an old 1876 French sword that we played with during the 50's. I delivered the Back of the Yard Journal. That fieldhouse was small, however, we sure packed it everyday after school. During the winter we all kept the ice nice and clean and no one would skate until it was ready. Winter time was project time, building race cars, model planes or any type of wood craft. We had ping pong tournaments amomg ourselves and then against other playgrounds. We had one instructor in the 50's we called her Teach

509. Rebels
I can answer some of your questions concerning the Rebels and the story of Rogers tavern. I grew up on 50th Place on Oakley. We were a very close and tight neighborhood and not many outsiders came to our playground. Our neighborhood was only a 2 block square. We had railroad tracks on the East side. Railroad tracks and the pumping station on the North side. Western Blvd on the West side and Clau
