Does anyone remember the following street vendors back in the 50's 1) The old man with his horse & wagon that drove through the alleys calling out for rags & iron. 2) The photographerand his pony that walked the strret looking for kids to take their picture. Can't remember the cost, however, my wife and I still have our pictures. 3) The old truck that sold produce in the neighborhood.

South Ashland and South Halsted was our Downtown back in the 50's. Most Sundays we would window shop because most stores were closed on Sundays. Now stores are open 365 days. Families can't even spend the holidays together, especially on Christmas. Someone always has to leave to go to work. What have we become!!!

Anyone growing up in the yards would probably know Eddie Surma. He probably be in his 80's now, however, he was a great softball player. He would play 2 games a day and maybe 5 games over the weekend on many teams. He was also known as "Champ". He played at Cornell Park, Gage Park, Kelly, Grant Park, 47th Damen or anywhere there was a league. I'm glad that 16in.is still around. When I s

Another park that Oakley Playground traveled to in the 50's was Destiney Manor Playground. It was located in an unlikely spot that very few knew that it existed. It was in the middle of a neighborhood around 52nd and Levitt. There were no signs on Damen pointing to this park. Any Back of the Yarders know about this park?

I lived three doors/houses east of the playground. Town Club Tavern was down the street from the pumping station. The front entrance to the pumping station was on Western Ave.

Back in the 50's I remember Green River, cherry and chocolate cokes, chocolate phosphates all in paper cone shaped cups that fit in a stainless stand and then they switched to glasses sometime later. We would go to the corner drug store and soda fountain on 51st and Western Ave "Yandas". Does anyone remember malt pills that came in a bottle? You could eat them direct or put them in a g

Leo's had great hamburgers. We couldn't eat meat on Fridays, being Catholic, so we waited for our dad to come home from work at 1am and he brought us hamburgers from Leo's.

Does anyone remember the Leo's Castle Hamburger stand a couple blocks east of Cornell Square Park. It was next to a liquor store/tavern. Later in the early 60's they built a sit in hamburger place, still called Leo's Castle.

We're Polish and Slovak so we went to Michaels, however, we loved the inside of St Josephs. My folks use to eat Syrena's. Do you remember the greasy spoon as us kids called it right on 47th a chili joint. We use to go there for chili instead of eating lunch in the basement at St Michaels. There was a hobby shop couple doors down.
