A friend of my dad worked at this factory back in the 70's and us kids would love when he came over to visit, he always had shopping bags full of cookies. and not just the butter ones. It's a shame though that these beautiful art deco can't be converted to another use, but I guess they all can't be saved since some are in crappy areas or are to far gone to save.

Some time in 79 or 80 was the last time I saw a train crossing California, it was a diesel loco with a single flat car with some type of large piece of equipment, I remember my dad was driving north bound on California and stopped because a flagman was standing on the track. Don't know anything about the golf course, but I also heard that Horner Park to the Northwest of the area your taking about. Was also a clay pit and brick making area, and latter a garbage dump before they turned it to the park. There is a thread on here that mentions the golf course, but I believe someone said it was a driving range? If I can find it again I will post the link.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I grew up near Horner park and I seem to remember the old (what seemed to be abandoned) boat houses as late as the mid to late 70's in the exact spot you're talking about. Then one day they were gone, I all ways wondered who would live in such deplorable conditions.
