Does anybody remember DiLeos at Central and Elston. It closed not too long after Roman Pucinski's wife died after a fall. Don't know whether it had anything to do with any legal proceedings which were filed in July of 1990, Currently there is a bank at the location.

There has been quite a bit discussed in this forum on Wielboldt's. I always found the lower scale Goldblatt's interesting. Here are some links with a brief history. The stores I was familar with were at Chicago and Ashland, Belmont and Ashland and on Milwaukee and Kedzie. http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/2683.html http://chicago.urban-history.org/sites/d_stores/l_miller.ht

The original boudaries of Bucktown before the real estate agents stretched them, had three public school buildings. I am looking for any additional information then what is detailed below or any memories of anybody who may have gone to Langland or Logan. In addition, the Chicago Tribune did not have a story with any details of a fire that burnt the original Pulaski school building in 1944. Can any

In doing some research into what businesses occupied old store fronts, I was using a old 1928 directory from the Chicago History Museum. Because this was during Prohibition, many of the old and after Prohibition later bars were listed as Soft Drink stores. Does anybody know what the definition of "soft drinks" were ? Is this 3.2 beer? Were these still bars with a wink and a nod and c

Found out that Noel State Bank was located at the opposite corner of the intersection at Milwaukee and Damen (1601 N. Milwaukee) The bank closed on 6/19/1931 due to heavy withdrawals. Just as today there were a number of articles about lawyers fees and expenses eating into and dividends received by depositors. As late as 1942 11 years later, a article mentions that the old depositors eventu

I am trying to find out as much information as I can for the Northwest Tower building at Milwaukee & North. I found a announcement in the Chicago Tribune announcing the construction of a 12 story building to be completed by April 1,1929. The article mentions a Noel State bank but doesn't mention whether or not they were developing it for occupancy or for investment. http://quicksearch.chi

The Tribune also ran a series of articles about successful businessmen in Mar 1953. The article dated Mar 7,1953 was about W.A.Wielboldt who was 96. It tells his story. http://quicksearch.chipublib.org/cgi-bin/cpl-gr.pl?url=http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=502152582&sid=6&Fmt=10&clientId=11417&RQT=309&VName=HNP

Found another great article Mar 30,1935 about the Wielboldt's on Milwaukee Ave being robbed of $2,000 by five men, one with a machinegun and four with revolvers. They were pursued by police and 12 gunshots were exchanged before they got away. http://quicksearch.chipublib.org/cgi-bin/cpl-gr.pl?url=http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=443622362&sid=6&Fmt=10&clientId=11417&RQT=309

Found a article announcing the construction of the Wielboldt's store on Milwaukee Ave. Was on the former site of the Lion store which burnt down. The date of the article is Nov 30,1898. It describes the building as four stories and basement high with frontage of 96 feet from 937-945 Milwaukee Ave going back 218 feet to Bauwans street (street must have been renamed later also believe the city ren

I found a link of a picture of a bookmobile that is similar to what I remember, except the Chicago bookmobile I believe was painted in shades of brown and grey. http://imagesearch.library.illinois.edu//cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/koopman&CISOPTR=298&CISOBOX=1&REC=8 I also found articles in the Chicago Tribune archives, indicating that as late as 1977, there were still bookmo

Just like movie theaters, Chicago had at one time many small bowling alleys, most of which are now gone. I remember going in the 60s to: Humboldt Bowl Congress Bowl Milwaukee Ave Fireside Bowl Fullerton Ave Diversey River Bowl Diversey Ave Believe it or not, I found some newspaper articles of bicycle races at Humboldt bowl in the 1930s. How this worked, I don't know. In addition in

I did some more research and found that prior to the White Eagle, there was a restaurant/bar and even further back a picnic grove called Tromba's. Old newspaper articles mentioned picnics with 2,000 people so the grove must have been a fair size. I don't know why there were a number of commercial picnic groves way back when especially in this case when a Forest Preserve was so close by. I a

Don't know if this is the theater you had in mind. The only reference that I could find for a Rialto theater was in a article that it was being knocked down in 1953. It was built in 1916 and had 1,500 seats. They mention the location as the NW corner of State & Van Buren. At the time the theater was being operated as Minskie's Burlesque.

239. No Meat
Hard to believe in this 24 hour a day 365 day a year shopping enviroment, but I remember not being able to buy meat after six o'clock on Saturdays. I was always told this was due to union rules that no meat, even though already cut and packaged by a butcher could not be sold unless a butcher was on duty. I remember at our local National annd Jewel, the butchers would take brown butcher paper and
