I've always been fascinated by the old buildings that you could tell use to be movie theaters. Listed below are NW side old movie theaters I found listed in a 1945 newspaper. Would appreciate it if anybody can identify the missing locations or other shows too small to advertise. How many of these buildings exist and what is there now? Is there anybody old enough to remember actually going to t

Anybody remember the old CPL bookmobile. My neighborhood did not have a library in the 60s, so once a week, a brown library bookmobile would hook up to the electic at the local National Food store. I don't remember the details about whether they were only there after school or all day. Anybody know when they went out of service?

Since you mentioned the Chicago Public Library, the assumption is that it is in a Chicago paper and that you can identify the article you have in mind. As Elaine mentioned, many libraries have access to Proquest which may have access to the Chicago Tribune archives. Otherwise you may have to rely on identifying the article, and someone may be able to email it to you as a private message.

Many of the older neighborhoods due to the fact that people did not own cars, relied on local funeral homes. These funeral homes were usually built close to particular churches. Some of them are still in business but moved to larger locations where they could accomodate parking lots and larger chapels and be closer to cemetaries, many just disappeared in history. In The Bucktown neighborhood

I believe the White Eagle stands where another restaurant or bar stood and was remodeled and greatly expanded. Does anybody remember the old name? Further down the street, the VFW operated a banquet hall at the old Bunker Hill Country club. Can anybody name any of the other restaurants/bars that operated along this stretch of Milwaukee Ave. in Niles?

As an example, I remember Sealtest and Highlander ice cream and Yo Ho and Blue Star potato chips. I also remember Borden's and Twin Oaks milk Does anybody have any info on these brands or their history? Please share the names of other products you remember.

In the 60s I remembered going to picnics at the Fox River Picnic Grove. There was something for everyone, swimming in the river,BINGO,horeshoes, rides, arcade games, food, riverboat ride, a marina. Anybody else have memories they wish to share. Other picnic places our family went to were Holiday Park,Gages Lake, Earhart Grove. Does anybody know where these places were located?

I know Bunker Hill Forest Preserve was once a golf course. The clubhouse was on Milwaukee Ave. Since the Chicago River splits the property, ther must have been a bridge over the river. Does anybody know when the bridge disappeared? Were any of the holes on the clubhouse side?

Reply to tomcat630 From the stories I hear, my neighborhood declined due to the fact that there were only under or overpasses on the main streets which are spaced four blocks apart. Small businesses were cut off from their customers who either were displaced or now lived on the other side of the expressway. Where you once may have walked down a side street a few blocks to a business, most peo

I've always been fascinated by how close the Kennedy Expressway comes to many churches as well as the number of side streets that dead end at the expressway, I've searched the Chicago Tribune archives, but there are very few articles about the land acquistion, disputes, moving of families and the actual knocking down of buildings and the construction. Literally thousands of people and bus
