The posting for a Standard promotion in the 70s reminded me of a Texaco promotion during the 60s. The corner gas station where I grew up was a Texaco. One of their brands was called Firechief. I remember having as a gift from my uncle a fire truck and a plastic fire helmet. If I remember correctly the fire helmet came with a radio or a microphone that was clipped to the side of the helmet.

Cock Robin at one time was called Prince Castle. I also remember going to many funeral luncheons at the old club house when it was run by the VFW. Does aybody have any info as to when the VFW bought the clubhouse and when it closed? I don't know what the timing was as to whether they closed because of the expansion of the White Eagle or whether the White Eagle took over the funeral lunch bu

The Chicago Tribune did a flashback page on the stockyards. They included a map showing three stations. I assume these stations were where the livestock was unloaded. The stations were Swift,Armour and Morris. I recognize the names Swift and Armour as historic names in the meat business. Does anybody know who Morris might have been. I assume that Swift and Armour were taken over by othe

There weren't any pictures in the Tribune. Here is a link for the Jefferson Park Historical society. You may be able to contact someone there who can direct you to a source for pictures or info on local papers. http://www.jeffersonparkhistory.org/

The ballroom was at 4847 Milwaukee. As late as 1986, I found a ad for dancing lessons. By 1988 another article for a savings and loan mentions that the building was demolished. The earliest mention I could find was a 1957 ad. I also found a ad in Feb 1956 where the Times Theater buildinng was being auction. So my best guess that the ballroom operated between 1957 and 1987.

I found in the Chicago Tribune that the woods were renamed after Ella Labagh in 1940. She apparently in 1901 was dismayed that workemen were cutting down the trees to burn in nearby kilns and worked to save the woods. The Cook County Forest Preserves were not founded until 1903. Until the renaming, the woods were called Snell Woods. I could not find any information as to who Snell was. In the

Living on the NW side I am not familar with the the status of Great Lake shipping and the Port of Chicago. I remember driving in from the south after a driving vacation and seeing huge grain silos. Do we still ship or receive any grain by ship? What types of ships still come into Chicago?

The alleys were not lit prior to 1966. In 1966 the city was selling bonds for lighting of the alleys. A Tribune article mentions that we had 2,240 miles of alleys and the cost for lighting was to be 13 million. The police commissioner Wilson stated that there were 37,000 crimes a year reported taking place in alleys.

The Cub and White Sox pictures were given away in July of 1977. One picture with a 5 dollar purchase with a limit of four. The ad mentions that there were only 600,000 so it was while supplies lasted. In addition it states the pictures were to be given away as stacked. No specific players could be requested. Weeks one had Biitner,Reuschel,De Jesus,Burris,Johnson,Lemon,Zisk and Garr.

Sbaer311 refered to mini bottles. In 1972 Jewel was offering 6 free "mini-editions" of classic American bottles, one each week for six weeks. In addition you were able to buy other 6" bottles for 39 cents or 9" bottles for 99 cents. A package of 12 minature authentic toppers cost 9 cents. A package or corks for the six and nine inch bottles cost 19 cents.

In riding my bike, on the NW side, I've come across a number of alleys that are not paved and a few where the alleys don't go all the way through so that the garbage truck has to back out, other alleys end at a parking lot. When I read the neighborhood paper on zoning issues, it seems as if the city discourages businesess from having their parking lot empty out into a alley. I've noted some exce

Apparently Neisner's was a national chain. I found a article in the Tribune dated 1960 where Neisner's was announcing the opening of their 36th store in the Chicago area. I found some other ads,but they didn't appear to do any newspaper advertising other then mentioned with other stores and I could not find any ad that listed any store locations. Here is the link for their Wikipedia article w

Three pharmacies I remember, were Northwestern Pharmacy on the corner of Damen and Milwaukee, It wasn't the closest to my house but it was one of the few that was open 24 hours. In the 60s when many stores closed at 6:00 on Saturdays and were closed on Sundays, I remember many times running there for my parents because they had a tube tester. If they did not have the right tube, you were without

Another piece of forgotten Chicago are all the old independent pharmacies that were found in the neighborhoods. Nowdays most are gone replaced by Walgreen's and CVS stores. In the 60's I still remember the pharmacist at times still mixing medicines as opposed to today's pharmacies where the majority of prescriptions come in boxes or the pharmacist basically count pills and the instructions are p

I was looking for something in the Tribune archives, and saw a ad in 1936 for Prager beer. It listed the Atlas brewing company. Don't know if this was a Chicago beer or not.

Does anybody remember being able to go to places like McDades,First or Advance Catalog stores or even Sears on Homan, where you were able to place catalog orders and wait for the orders to be filled? Memories of the anticiaption of watching the packages come down on the conveyor belts. No shipping no waiting for deliveries almost instant gratification.

At one time Chicago had many neighborhood shopping districts. In a age where many people did not own cars and relied on either a bus or foot power these districts were busy with customers. With the flight to suburbia, the downfall of the anchor stores like Goldblatts,Weiboldts,Woolworths these districts slowly died and took many independent stores with them. Over the years, the city has made

I ran across some ghost beer signs on buildings that must have been taverns at one time. One was for Edelweiss and the other building had a faded sign for Fox Deluxe. This brought to mind another name that I haven't heard since the 60's, I remember the local tavern receiving deliveries for Drewery's. As a kid, I remembered the truck because it was painted sky blue and had a big picture of a Can
