Thanks for mentioning the chicago-l.org site, daveg. I just love that site and have spent many, many hours there! :-) Here is another addictive site with photos of trolly buses (as well as showing great Chicago neighborhood background images). Chicago Trolly Coaches

On Addison, just west of Long, there was a lovely bakery named the Vienna Pastry Shop. It is now closed. Their breads and pastries were not only delicious but extremely reasonably priced. They had a few tables inside and served coffee too. There was also The Village Bakery (named so because of its location in Schorsch Village) on Belmont between Oak Park Avenue and Rutherford. The old sign is stil

I do remember that "Sponge Candy" as well as their licorice and "Violet" candies. My mom used to buy "bridge mix" there as well. The last time I had sponge candy was a few years ago from a little candy shop in Long Grove. I don't know where else you could find it now.

Thanks, CrazyIvan25! Schorsch Village may not be the most exciting neighborhood in Chicago but I love living there too. I'll keep digging and see if I can find more photos.

It is really sad to see so many places lost and gone forever... Especially when a whole neighborhood vanishes. Thanks again, Berwyn Frank, for the article on the Stob Family. It's a wonderfully detailed written time capsule. And thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and memories of "The Valley." Happy Turkey Day!

BrewynFrank -- I think that yes, you are right, the neighborhood had been steadily deteriorating over the years but that the final blow was because of the University gobbling up land for their Medical District development. 1996 Chicago Reader Article

I don't know how well this image will show up here, so I'll post it 2 different ways, but here is an article from the Chicago Tribune's historical archives. The photo is of the 3200 block of North Rutherford Avenue. I'm still searching for historical photos of Oak Park Avenue. 1939 View Schorsch Village Chicago Tribune Article

222psm - Yep, you are absolutely right. It was a tank! They just don't make cars like that any more. My dad's was a cream colored, 2-door, hardtop with lots of chrome and had a red interior... Red dashboard, red steering wheel, red carpet, red upholstery. :)

Fascinating story on the Stob family history! I had no idea that area was once a Dutch neighborhood. Perhaps the U of I Medical Center complex has something to do with the final clearing out of this area but am just guessing here. I attended the University of Illinois back in the 80's and had always heard about how parts of the Italian neighborhood it occupied were cleared away when that campus wa

Welcome to FC! Will see if I can dig up some historic photos Oak Park Avenue and of Schorsch Village in general as I'm doing some research on other parts of the Dunning area. I grew up in the neighborhood too. Small world!

Awesome story, daveg! You know, it could have been the gas from Sunoco. I remember my dad not wanting to return to a certain Clark filling station in our neighborhood because he thought they (this was before the pump-your-own-gas era) had once put "bad gas" into his 1961 Ford Galaxie 500.

Daveg - Yes, those pumps did go to 260. The simplest explanation I could find about those old Sunoco pumps was in this forum. Photo of Sunoco Pump Dial Forum

Daveg, My apologies. I'm still learning how to post things correctly here. About an hour ago I posted the links to two stories about Mount Olive a different way and they were working. Now, however, after logging off then logging back in again, the links are no longer working. If anyone would like to have the articles emailed, I'd be happy to do so. Just PM me. Or, if you have access to the Chic

Because of a discussion on another topic that is related to the location of Mount Olive, I thought it might be a good idea to begin a fresh thread on this. If anyone has information, memories, stories to tell, photos, etc. on this historic cemetery, please share! Fountain inside of entrance at Mount Olive Mount Olive Dedication

The way I post photos here is to copy the URL from my photo(s) on Flickr then click on the "Insert image URL" icon here. I then paste my photo's URL into the box that pops up. This is an easy method for me, though someone else out there may have a better idea. Example Photo
