That would definitely make my day! My week! My year! A couple of weeks ago I stopped in to talk with one of the managers at Mount Olive Cemetery because I'm also working on a family genealogy project and a few of my relatives are interred there. The tracks once ran through that cemetery. The manager did at one time have some information on those tracks and also a few photos. However, he gave all t

Glad you liked the photos, 222psm! And, like you, I hadn't visited the "Chicago Switching" site in a long time so was pleasantly surprised to see photos of the old Dunning spur track circa 1980.

Here are a few photos I found on the web of the old Dunning spur tracks. Also my apologies for the misspelling of the Kimbell Candy Company in another post here. Oops! Copyright © 2010 The Milwaukee Road (captions by Tom Burke). All Rights Reserved.

My Apologies for the misspelling of Kimbell in the original subject line of this post. For those of you interested in the old Dunning spur train tracks as well as this post, I found the following bit of information on the web today. There is another thread on the topic of Noel State Bank under the "Questions and Answers" section, page 3, of the forum list. I've always wondered about the history of the Northwest Tower building too having passed by it nearly every day when I rode the Blue Line, even before it was called the Blue Line.

My father, in his younger days, worked part time as a "pin boy." I remember bowling at Turner's which was a bowling alley and gym. It was torn down a few years ago and there are now condos on the old site which is at 6625 W. Belmont.

Technically not in Chicago but... I sometimes work in downtown Hammond and the building at 5246 Hohman Avenue still has both a working old freight elevator and a passenger elevator which is operated by a very nice lady named Sheila during regular business hours. If you are ever in the area it's worth a visit. Newspaper Article

I've always gotten strange looks every time I told people that my mom called the Patio the "pay show" so it's nice to know someone else from the hood pronounces it this way too. And I'm so glad to see the old place being renovated.

I had no idea those Good Humor trucks still existed! Your post prompted me to do a little searching and I found that Wikipedia has a nice history of the company. Hood Humor

Great photos! Nice shots of the architectural details on the buildings too. I love stuff like this but must admit, rather shamefully, that I've never explored that area of Chicago. And now, after seeing your pics, I plan on taking a drive out there one of these days. I'd also like to do a bit of reading up on the history of this interesting place.

Another fond memory I have of ZDE is that they used to pass out song sheets to every table on weekend evenings so that diners could sing along with the German band that played there. It was great fun! Mirabell, out on Addison just west of Kimball is another place still serving up German food in the city.

It was such a special treat to walk or bike down to that little B/R shop on warm summer evenings. I also remember the old Good Humor trucks riding up and down the neighborhood streets, ringing the bells that beckoned us kids to stop whatever we were doing and buy an ice cream bar. Those bars also tasted a lot better back then! I also remember the corner shop on Irving and Central which is now a Me

The Baskin and Robbins Shop that I used to go to was on the corner of Belmont and Rutherford. We called it "31 Flavors" when I was a kid. Is this the same shop you remember? I still walk past this corner several times a week and it is now a Polish cosmetics shop. The ice cream WAS better back in those days. I don't remember when the shop closed but I would have gone there in the late 196

Thank you all for the additional information! And dcoleman and chicagosue, thank you for sharing some of your family's history on the company. There are now condos on the old site at Nashville and Belmont. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=41.938325,-87.790763&z=18&t=h&hl=en

So sorry for the error. Thanks for the correction, Greatzambo. Indeed, the Tartan Tray was in Carson's and not Wieboldt's. Your mention of Community also made me think of another long-gone store, Saxon's Paint, which was also located on a corner of the that busy Milwaukee, Central, Foster, Northwest Highway intersection.

It looks like both buildings are still there. The church across the street and a few doors down from the brick church is at the address found in your bible. Hope this helps! Mizpa Church Cook County Assessor Info on 1347 N Damen

Chris, thanks so much for the Flickr link. Awesome photos! Yes, way back in the day there were funeral trains. If you look up old obituaries you'll often see listed the cemetery where the deceased is to be buried and a description of how to get there. For example, "by carriage to Calvary..." or "funeral at Graceland Cemetery Chapel, Friday, April 5, 2:30 p.m. C.M. and St. P. Ry. trai

I remember shopping at that Kresge's on Belmont and Central too! The old creaky wooden floors and all the great stuff they had to browse through. My mom and I would board the Belmont "trolly" bus to get there and thought the ride on those old busses was great fun! I also remember the fire and afterwards the Goldblatt's next door smelling like smoke for ages. There's now a nice fruit and

Thanks for posting this topic, Chris! Under the "Questions and Answers" part of the FC Forums there is a topic called "What was at Montrose and Narragansett prior to Wright College?" posted. There is a lot of discussion on that thread about these tracks. I'm still doing a bit of research on these tracks as I'm fascinated with them. I guess because I grew up just a stone's-throw

Thanks for the update on the state of the repairs to the building, Scott. I remember way back when electric "trolly" busses ran down Belmont Ave., which is nearby, so perhaps the building did function for the CTA as well.

Thanks to everyone for posting so much info here. I've learned so much from this site! Welcome and thank you for starting the post, GrowingRetro. Great old photos, BFrank! And WOW, thanks so much for pointing out the red, white and blue V on Diversey and Marshfield. I will try to take a walk by there next week.

Thanks so much for the information on this once-wonderful, neighborhood, Berwyn Frank. I did not know much about "block busting" except for what my mother had told me about her experience living in, and then being scared and moving out of, her old neighborhood near Chicago and Crawford (now Pulaski) back in the 50s. All the historic pics you've posted are great and I love the then-and-no

Happy picture taking, Artista! Thanks for the update on the building. I really need to take a walk over there one of these days. And 222psm is correct in explaining how to use Flickr to post photos. I had never used it until a few weeks ago and it was very easy. If I can do it... you know it has to be easy!

Hi, General History! Thanks for the information. If you are interested, there are two other really great posts that have some additional information on that old track line and on Dunning started by Artista in the Questions and Answers Forum under "What was at Montrose and Narragansett Prior to Wright College?" and in the Forgotten Chicago Sightings Forum under "The Building at Appro
