Bought a sign that says "Shady Cottage". The person claimed it was from their grandad's bar on the North side. They thought near Harlem and Belmont. Wondered if anyone heard of it and/or knew where it had been. I couldn't find it using a couple of quick Google searches, so thought I'd reach out for anyone who might have any memories of the place.

There were also two original yellow ones sold where someone painted over the old sign. One said Comfort St The other said Easy St I spoke with one of the winners and when he picked it up, he could tell it was a S. Shields underneath the paint, so he lucked out indeed.

At some point, it seems that someone bought the name for Fox Deluxe because my dad used to get it in the late 70's and possibly into the early 80's. He found it one day in those returnable cases at a place in Des Plaines and it was apparently pretty cheap. Many years ago, I noticed that a building along a train route that I took had the names Tysons Foods and Fox Deluxe on it. If you loo

I think the first post is saying that it was the first pizza place in the Loop, not in that the first pizza place in the United States was opened in the Loop. My dentist's father was written up in the Parade magazine (or whatever it was called at the time) for opening what was claimed to be the first Chinese restaurant in Chicago that delivered. He said that when he was a small child, he wou

I ran across a crock that was probably for butter or cheese that says "Grommes & Ullrich, fine foods" below a printed picture that includes a caption above it that says "Court House Square, Chicago, 1866" I did a Google search and found some had been sold in the past and that there was a whiskey distributor in Chicago by that name. I also found an old book on google fro

Thanks Frank. It is interesting to hear that a 1977 book had approximately half of them that way even though all the ones after 1965 did not.

Anyone have any info on this guy. I found what appears to be a trivet (that can also be hung on the wall, like so many of them) made out of wood that has an example of the work he does on chairs, so it also works as a bit of advertising for him. It has a piece of yellow tape on the back that is printed with the following: Cane & Rush Seats By WEBER THE WEAVER 2205 McDaniel Avenue Ev

I found a postcard sized photo of Richard J. Daley on metal that is brass colored, but may be aluminum with the brass color printed on it along with the photo. The back says Steve Allen Metalphoto Chicago, Inc. 30 W. Washington Chicago, ILL. 60602 312/332-2866 The picture of Daley looks like he's younger than when he passed away in 1976. He also uses the 3 letter abbreviation for Illinois

Nice Vienna sign Frank. Anyone ever hear of Metalphoto Chicago Inc. at 30 W. Washington with someone named Steve Allen? Had a phone number listed as 312/332-2866. I found a postcard size photo of Richard J. Daley (old man Daley) on metal that has a background that looks like brass, but I'm guessing is aluminum with a brass color printed on it along with the photo. I couldn't find anyth

Now that you mention it, that seems about right because I worked near there in 2003 and it was still being worked on then now that I think about it.

The answer to my question about the year 2001 on many of the downtown signs can be found in another thread here. http://forgottenchicago.com/forum/1/6954/why_do_many_downtown_street_signs_have_the_year_2001_on_them_and_a_logo To answer the original poster's question, another place you can purchase such used signs is through chicagostreetsigns.com

Thank you all for your comments. Elaine's link was excellant as it actually has the same logo that the signs have. I also seem to recall that millenium park wasn't anywhere near ready for the millenium and I wonder if that is perhaps part of the reason Chicago tried making a big deal out of 2001. Now I'll have to see when millenium park opened (although I seem to recall it was kind of in stag
