I saw him the night he arrived in Chicago at the Cardinal's mansion. I was visiting a friend in Old Town and we were watching his arrival on TV and realized how close we were. We ran like crazy through Lincoln Park and arrived in time to see him come out on the balcony and bless the people who were there. A day or two later, I got to see his helicopter land in Lincoln Park and saw him get out

I remember driving down Kenmore around midnight in the mid-80's with my old boyfriend. Hookers as far as the eye could see. The area had been very turbulent in the 1970s and 1980s (maybe even the 1960s). It's good to see it turning around.

Very, very cool pictures!!! I unfortunately have nothing to add to your search. I am also trying to find any old pictures or information of my apartment building and the one I lived in before this one in Portage Park. Apartment buildings are hard to research. No one keeps records of who lived in which apartment when, except during census years. Good luck with your search, and I'd be interes

There was one in South Shore at 79th & Jeffrey. When you walked in the door, the whole area in front of the window had shelves of 10 cent items. Everything from cheese curls to bubble bath.

Maybe the bodies were delivered by train there also. On a side note, I know one sad story from there about a family that was so poor that they couldn't afford to hire someone to bring a young child's body to the cemetery for burial and the father and two daughters carried the casket on a streetcar to the cemetery. (The mother had passed away a few months earlier.) Do you go to Mt. Olive often

The bank was directly across from Sears (Irving Park/Milwaukee corner) then Kee's (Milwaukee/Cicero corner). If that makes any sense. It was across the street from Borovik Drug Store.

Okay, I'm going to ask a stupid question. Did the Dunning Line run near where the Dunning hospital used to be? The reason I ask is I live about 1-1/2 miles east of there at Irving Park and sometimes during the night I hear lone train whistles and it sounds like they are coming from that direction. I know there are train tracks about 4600 west, but this is east of me and I swear the sound is com

Does anyone remember a store called "Mr. Peters"? I found a box of letters and papers from my parents' house in a blue box with "Mr. Peters" on it. It looks like it might have contained a blouse or shirt at one time. From the looks of the box, I think it might have been a women's clothing store, but I've never heard of it and wondered if any of you have. Also, how long ago

There was one on Devon Avenue at either Campbell or Maplewood in the '60s. I used to like it better than Woolworth's.

Was the tomb the "Couch" mauseleum that is in Lincoln Park? That's the only one I know of.

Yes, I remember Lower Level Louie's very well!!!! I used to get food from there almost every day and bring it back to my office at 111 E. Wacker. I remember old Louie taking the orders and putting them down at the window behind him. There was a counter there that was kind of S-shaped and a few waitresses that were there for years! Great place for breakfast, too! I was so disappointed when I

At Six Corners, in the late '70s I remember a women's clothing store called Hellers and one called Rubens. Also, there was a Pollyanna women's clothing store and a Goodman's yarn store and a Reiters home furnishing (curtins, drapes, shower curtains, etc.) store and Deluxe Records. The Alpine Meat Market was on Milwaukee. I remember there was also a deli on Irving Park just west of Cicero, but I

I really miss dime stores! I remember when I was very small (in the 1950's) there was a dime store on the south side at 79th & Bennett called "Horny's Dime Store." I remember my mom leaving me by the coloring books in the back of the store and doing her shopping and coming back for me. And, I remember smelling the oilcloth on big rolls that they sold for tablecloths. I didn't lik

I just did a general search on Google for "Rinaldo Tailors." There is a vintage jacket listed on Etsy which was made by Rinaldo Tailors. If this is the same place, it appears to have been in St. Louis. Do the Google search and see what you think...if it is the same one. You've got me curious now!;)

Are you sure it's from someplace in Chicago? The CH may refer to an abbreviation before the numbers. When I was little, our phone number started with "Bayport 1" which was abbreviated to "BA 1".

I love seeing these old bank buildings! In the old days, you could tell it was a bank by the regalness (is that a word?) of the building. Now they are putting bank branches in old Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.
