Rumor in our parish was that our Pastor, Father Alex Peloso (one of Chicaago's most profitable Bingo Operating Parishes) didn't push the city too hard in order to build the new facilities from scratch.
The other story was that the Ward Bosses in our 26th Ward, who were Polish, didn't quite work as hard to save the Italian church.
Who knows.
But as you observe, the land in question really could have been spared.

it doesn't add up...as you can see from the pix, the land was spared. What didn't survive was the church.
The other possible explanation is that the xpressway split the neighborhood and those that had any allegiance to the old Erie and May church were relocated.

I remember as late as 1972, A very old-line drug store, With fountain service existed at the NE corner of Grand & Halsted. I wonder how come they tore that building down?. It was a classic place. I think it disappeared in the early-mid 1970's.

According to some 1967 photo, Just west of LaRoc's Drive-In on Grand was a 3-4 story building with an appliance or gas heater dealer. What was exactly there ? & Why was it demolished?.

Angelo's pizzeria in the picture was operated by Charles Gioe's wife.
The car he was killed in was taken to the police station on Racine & Superior
(the M squad station).

Northwest closer to Ohio Street. Not to far though. 546 North Milwaukee.

I was part of the last graduating class from the old Santa Maria Addolorata School. I always heard that it was Father Alex who wanted a new church, so he promoted tearing down the old church and school.
