My father, in his younger days, worked part time as a "pin boy." I remember bowling at Turner's which was a bowling alley and gym. It was torn down a few years ago and there are now condos on the old site which is at 6625 W. Belmont.

Technically not in Chicago but... I sometimes work in downtown Hammond and the building at 5246 Hohman Avenue still has both a working old freight elevator and a passenger elevator which is operated by a very nice lady named Sheila during regular business hours. Great photos! Nice shots of the architectural details on the buildings too. I love stuff like this but must admit, rather shamefully, that I've never explored that area of Chicago. Another fond memory I have of ZDE is that they used to pass out song sheets to every table on weekend evenings so that diners could sing along with the German band that played there. It was great fun! Mirabell, out on Addison just west of Kimball is another place still serving up German food in the city.

So sorry for the error. Thanks for the correction, Greatzambo. Indeed, the Tartan Tray was in Carson's and not Wieboldt's. Your mention of Community also made me think of another long-gone store, Saxon's Paint, which was also located on a corner of the that busy Milwaukee, Central, Foster, Northwest Highway intersection.
