Thanks, bwalsh! Love those photos and very interesting history on that building. And, yes, daveg, the FC crew deserves much praise for their excellent articles. I've learned so much about Chicago from this site and am grateful to the staff as well as all the forum posters here.

Great find, Nancy! I was thrilled to see that the site included information on, as well as an opening day poster for, the movie theater I mainly went to when I was young, the Will Rogers (1937-1987). So many great memories... Thank you.

Fran, I think Vern H is correct. It looks like the building which housed the old Dayan's Store, which is now a Family Dollar Store. 5546 W. Belmont Ave. A bit about the owner of Dayan's

Yes, thanks, Ivan! Very cool site! In an earlier entry on this post I had put in a link to those exact 1980's photos of the Kimbell Candy Company you found on chicagoswitching.com.

Nancy, Thanks for mentioning the Maller's Building! My father also worked in the Maller's building back in the 1960's and the old elevator was still in operation then. And, yes, the building currently houses a large number jewelry companies. My dad always came home from work with stories of robberies that occurred in the building which was nicknamed "Den of Thieves."

Thanks, fleurblue! I think this can dates from the 1960's and was used until we stopped burning leaves sometime in the 1970s.

Nice photos, Artista! I'm so glad you had luck finding some more in the neighborhood. I found one more bin yesterday and will post that picture by this afternoon.

Thanks so much! And I though I was the only one who got excited over such things... :-) There are still a few of these trash bins around in the alleys of Schorsch Village (SV), Artista. I can give you the exact locations if you want to go have a look at them. I'll keep an eye out for these bins in other neighborhoods as well. The bins I found in SV are on the yard side of the chain link fences w

Sorry about the poor quality of these phone-taken photos but here a couple of those old garbage bins I found in my neighborhood. One of them shows it was made by the Chicago Granitine Manufacturing Co. That company also made stationary laundry tubs. Bin 1 Bin 2 Bin 2 close up

Here are a few things I found on that old Lakewood bridge over Montrose, 222psm. I know this is way off topic but wanted to try to answer at least a part of your question as I love this kind of rail history stuff. The old Lakewood track right-of-way between the eastern wall of Graceland Cemetery and the CTA Red Line tracks and on the south side of Montrose is now Challenger Park inside of which

Awesome photo! What a great find, bowler. I wonder if this is the old Jewel/Osco that was at 6209 W. North Avenue which is now a "Fresh Market."

I'm in too. Sounds like it could be a fun FC "field trip" and a great way to document sites and buildings that may not be around much longer.

Very cool old Pic, Artista! I bet someone out there will be able to solve the mystery of that "Rug Mart" company. Just wanted to mention to other ghost sign seekers that, as I was riding the L the other day, I noticed there are a bunch of ghost signs on buildings along the north side CTA Red Line from about Lawrence to the Loyola station. One of these days I'll try to get to the Edge

Here's a fairly recent Google Earth photo of the corner of Narragansett and Irving with the current A's Restaurant. The Chinese restaurant you mentioned, HOLTANEK, was "Ho Ho Chop Suey" which is gone and another Asian restaurant has taken its place. Irving Park and Narragansett My question now is, does anyone remember what the name of the restaurant on the corner of Belmont and Nar

I'm so sorry to hear about Vienna's baker. How sad. I know the bakery was still open for business as late as 2003 or 2004. I can't recall exactly when they closed their doors. Here's a photo I snapped back in 2003 or so.

I would not have remembered the "Lets go to the Races" either! Thank you, Kchi! My parents would sit in front of the TV with their game card for the race. We never won anything, though. I also have those plastic presidents somewhere. If I come across them, I'll post a photo. Thanks so much for the memory jog!
