It's funny, how Chicagoan's are "ignorant" of other areas of the city. One of my friend's grandmothers became a secret shopper for Goldblatt's (she was from Morgan Park/Beverly) and had to go to the Uptown store - she'd had no idea the city went that far north!

Wasn't Lake Shore Drive built on fill east of the existing beach walk, now that I think about it?

That's pretty much it - "plumbing problems" isn't exactly a reason for whole sale demolition. I can understand la Gang making work for herself, but it would have been more interesting to have completed the complex (there were supposed to be two towers originally, a theme in Hyde Park, the lone tall building in 56th between Kenwood and Kimbark was supposed to have gotten a twin in '30, bu

For those of you interested, the very last bits of Harry Weese's Pierce Tower dormitory on the U of C campus are about to be demolished.

Even in the mid-80's it was still somewhat bustling if run down. Daley Jr really did a number on the city in some respects - he demolished a lot of building which could have been restored. Arthur Brazier also has a lot to answer for along E. 63rd Street. I think had the old phone company building be rehabbed successfully in the 80's the street would have turned out very differently today.

Who actually owns the land now - the city or the CTA? I wouldn't think the alderman would really care.

I'll be uploaded a blurry, dusty picture of the Brewster's elevator sometime this week...

Yes, Goldstein is certainly an "interesting" movie to say the least. It looks to me like bandit filmmaking in places (i.e. at the airport without permission, etc). The scenes driving up in Marina City in the garage are just eerie.

Some Ruby Dee trivia; she was in DC (at Dulles) on 9-11 and rode back to Chicago on a bus chartered by a Republican Roundtable Women's group who had been going to meet Laura Bush. Ruby and one of my friends were the only non-GOP people on the bus back (actually very kind of them to take fellow Illinoisians home with them - they turned down people along the way). BTW where did Ms. Hansberry liv

I can't remember the exact name, but the hospitals became part of UIC when they rebranded from Circle Campus (part of the reason for the name change was the merger of the two campus' into one school which had been separate up until then). They had been part of a state medical school - keep in mind that there still are numerous quasi-affiliated institutions there as well. "There" bein

Grammaphone's still around. It had competition from Borderline in boystown, but they just moved to Mandersonville. Does DJ Markski still have a store?

I wish OHC was twice a year so one could get to more sites. Was very impressed with Elks Memorial, but less so with Brewster Apartments. My parents wanted to see the new day care building at U of C and my dad told the architect he thought that the building was sterile! Nice set of photos - thanks for posting them.

I remember those pictures. I used to live across the street from Senn. I think the pictures are before the east wings were built. Yes, that's the Fine Arts building in the last photo. I think that must be the dedication of the Paris Metra entrance to the Van Buren station.

Deejo - but she wasn't an "older" woman back then.... I wasn't aware she was considered an "out" writer, though I'm not surprised one little bit.

Was it Ruby Dee (or was she younger then?)? Chicago Whispers sounds intriguing.

Indianapolis is the same way - their street numbering goes several counties north of the city (not the addresses necessarily, but the street naming).

Oh Dorchester Apartments, yes, the Stein Tower, one of the few brutalist buildings in Chicago (and even fewer among SOM's production). That and the Cloisters next door are rental buildings owned by the University. That was designed by Skidmore and won AIA awards at the time - 68 I believe. It's unlikely the University would try and buy any more property within the main parts of HP, too expensi

Woodlawn residents have been dead set against any university "incursions" south of 61st Street so there is very little U of C development there, look at all the fuss when they bought property in Washington Park a year or two ago. I'm not sure which "Dorchester high-rise" you are talking about - there are two University owned rentals on Dorchester in the 5800 block, the Stei

I wonder how far the tunnels went - Chicago being so near water table I can't imagine tunnels going terribly far or being very deep without elaborate pumps and waterproofing.

That sounds far fetched since the Green Mill is a long way from the lake, though a tunnel to the street or another building (or a hidden door) seems plausible.

A large number of faculty don't live in HP because it's not "pc" enough for them or it's too "unsafe"... The little greystones on Harper are a bit too far from campus for the University to be particularly interested in buying them. They are building massive residential complexes for students since they are trying to drastically increase the undergraduate population (where

According to Hyde Park's Finest News Source (it's not far off the Onion to be honest, at times), these lovely greystones are in imminent danger of demolition. http://hpherald.com/2013/10/01/antheus-to-demolish-greystones/
