The co-op in Hyde Park used to have an annual knife sharpening day. The mother of HS classmates was the sharpener, I think she may still do it at annual events in the shopping center.

Hyde Park and Kenwood are a prime example of this - the blocks vary by size and there are short streets interspersed in the regular blocks, as well as missing alleys and variations in sidewalk placement. It's always been my understanding that there were many adjustments to the street names and numbers, some caused by annexations and others by inconsistencies.

There's an Indian Boundary Road in Chesterton (Indiana) which runs east-west.

They are somewhat similar to the Metra Electric stations in places (though they were mostly brick built under wide viaducts rather than "inside" the fill of the viaduct.

No idea - it also looks like some of it has been cut up into lots. I suspect in places you can just climb up. Do it like early Sunday morning or something when you look "above the board" as it were. Good luck and post pictures! CrazyIvan25 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > so davy7 who do i contact? Should i continue with > going to alderma

I went to one of the early 70's CPS High Schools and we had ac (though my local paper claims it doesn't....). Though by that time, any major new building in the US would have had it as a matter of course.

It looks like most of the embankment east of the green line has been purchased as part of surrounding parcels according to the CoC (City of Chicago) zoning maps.

I wish I'd explored the site before the demolition of the plant itself.

Still just a bit left, will probably be gone by end of week (wish I'd had a camera with me yesterday). Only two or three buildings left in demo area south of 55th and East of Cottage too. I think those are staying, at least two or three of them. Wonder how the hospital will work around them.

The worst, if not exactly strange, I've seen are when the building abuts the sidewalk and the gas meter overhangs it. Seems to be primarily residential buildings which have been retrofit. I can think of one around the corner from me and then some in my old neighborhood. I always wondered how they didn't get vandalized more often. Now that I think about it I'm not sure they're meters, but I'm not s

61st Street curves a bit to the north between Dorchester and the remnants of Blackstone immediately west of the IC ROW/Embankment (which wasn't built until the 20's I think). That certainly seems logical if there was a branch line to the west for passenger traffic. The "gatehouse" in Oak Woods almost looks as if it is a depot!

I'm surprised that the embankment east of the existing line isn't CTA/CoC property.

My understanding is that coal gas was prevalent before natural gas was available and that the burners are rather different - which is why heating wasn't done with it before the advent of natural gas (I would assume cost was part of it and not just burners, etc).

Yeah, that high-rise is the Appleville Condominiums, which was built in the early/mid eighties. I think the lot was vacant for years before that - it's readily visible from the westbound Stevenson to northbound Dan Ryan ramp.

I think the first readily commercially available gas ranges were for sale in the 20's. The building I grew up in was built in 1906 and there were flues for the ranges. The building I live in now, but in the m

Fears of drug usage have been around for a while, witness films such as Reefer Madness or other, earlier, fears. The biggest of all was the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) which was against alcohol, among other things.
