Don't we already have something for Amelia? Like something more honorific than an honorary street sign, or am I dreaming it?

I would have thought that it was signal wires for the RR or one of the utility companies owned a ROW there and had to keep them in place and in use during construction.

The Chicago Daily News is a great resource for those of you who may not have investigated it before. Just sayin'...

I hadn't realized that the Hedgerow on Hyde Park Blvd was Booth, Nagle & Hartray. It was changed slightly iirc right after completion, but I can't quite remember how.

I don't remember there ever being bottle refunds in Chicago, but that could have just been our neighborhood.

Beat me to those two obvious ones. 7100 South Shore Drive is now a rental apartment building and looks pretty much as it does there except for a 4-story addition to the west, which is visible here today. Here's mine. Mostly repeated a couple sites that friends wanted to go see. Most impressive, to me anyways, was seeing Dr. Jones office, yes that Dr Jones, Phd. https://www.flickr.com/photos/30052777@N07/sets/72157648871980061/

Is this at all in conjunction with the new pedestrian bridge over the RR ROW (Metra/CN) and Lake Shore Drive?

Interesting deterioration between the two photos. Looks like there's room on the viaduct for anther track, which would certainly be useful with our crazy freight traffic today.

Wasn't there a Hillman's in Block 37 too?

You can see the enclosed stairs up to the platform too, as well as the tower, which I assume was a signal tower. But commuter service to where exactly? The loop? Seems like a circuitous route to me, and then to Valpo? Has anybody ever been up the stairs? Anybody here I mean...

The signs are currently on Adams because of the street direction. I think originally 66 continued to LSD (aka Rt. 41).

Actually, the current "end" of Route 66 is right outside my office, well, within a block. Lots of tourists there taking photos. The CSO is proposing turning their corner lot (currently underused/utilized by Rhapsody/Tessori) into a Rte 66 Museum and "pocket park" parklet.

I'd assume stone (limestone or sandstone) or stucco. The top is new (newly rebuilt) as are the gargoyles.

A lot of that rich and highly ornamented terra cotta was actually an "off the shelf" product back then, or, more accurately, out of the catalog. Architects/builders could select patterns, etc and combine them as they wished (I'm sure custom colors and patterns were available too). Hence, some fantastic buildings which are actually pretty modest (or were in cost). As an aside there used t

There were Victory Gardens on every vacant parcel in Hyde Park through the 80's, but they are mostly developed (in fact, all developed) now. Some of them had pretty vile soil - people had "enhanced" the soil with sewage fertilizer which had toxins in it, as I recall...

A lot of people in Hyde Park still have the old phones from that era - I have one that came with my apartment which has the old exchange listed. My mom tried to call "the phone company" back in the day and called from our neighbors who still only had that on their phone.. Poor Ernestine didn't have a good day with that.
