The firehouse on Elston was built in 1960 and is located at 3401. The Polk directory for 1928 shows houses at 3401 and 3405. So if there ever was a picnic grove there, it would appear to have had to have been earlier than the 1920s.

Thank You Nickvet419 for the aerial reference. If you go to the bottom and click on T1981, it still shows the two bridges across the river from the back of once was the clubhouse area. When you click on T1993 the bridges are gone.

Just based om personal experience, I also assume that a good portion of the business is more heavily weighted to cans. I myself would prefer bottles, but the pricing makes it more economical to buy cans which can be bought for a relatively cheap prices around the holidays. I don't care for 2 liters due to the loss of carbonation. I am not aware of a big push to return to returnable bottles.

I was listening to a old time radio program of Casey Crime Photographer. The show was sponsored by Anchor Hocking. Within the commercial from 1949 they were advertising the introduction of the new non returnable bottle. I was surprised that the throwaway bottles started that early since we were still returning bottles into the 60's. Just recently I saw a Coca Cola truck making a delivery to

I found the followig article that describes the train stations. In addition it has a map that shows the location and the it lists which railroads used each station. http://hubpages.com/hub/Chicagos-Passenger-Railroad-Stations-of-the-20th-Century This website below if you scroll down far enough has a section labeled Chicago Passenger Stations, that indeed mentions Parmalee as having a lock

I was always curious about the logistics of moving passengers and their luggage between the various railroads that were serviced by different train stations in the golden age of train travel. It had to be more complicated than just walking across a airport concourse like we do today. I remember seeing old newsreels of movie stars stopping off in Chicago when they were traveling between the coa

In the same block of stores as the pet store and Fox studios, I remember a haberdasher or men's store, a shoe store that I think sold Red Goose shoes and a fish store that we would go to on Friday's during Lent to get cooked fish.

I grew up in a old neighborhood that had some vaulted sidewalks. I went to school with someone who had a house with a storage area under the sidewalk. I was told that at one time some of the vaulted sidewalks had outhouses under them. Does anybody know when city laws were changed to outlaw outhouses? The house I lived in was old, and I was told the house was built without bathrooms. In order

Can anybody provide any info on the history or architecture of these schools? I rode past both schools recently, and at first glance they looked more like high schools than Chicago elementary schools. Just their size and more elaborate entrances than what I am used to seeing in other Chicago Public schools surprised me. Maybe just the style when they were built or a trend at the time for less

In my travels, I've come across several old Illinois Bell buildings converted to other uses. With computerization, conversion to wireless, they no longer needed all the old clerical offices and garages. Just like Chicago public schools, the buildings I know seem to have distinguishable architectural style. On Montrose and Linder they coverted the building to Vaughan School. One Northwest hig

Here is a link to a article about Brand brewing with pictures that mentions the rail connection to the Chicago Northwestern. https://sites.google.com/site/usbrewingcompany/ Found a Tribune article Oct 1916 which mentions that Hettler bought the property from Brand. The land consisted of 10.6 acres 110 feet NW of Snow street. The lumber yard was at 2601 Elston. It was still operating as la

I remember turning down a side street near St Bonaventure, which would make it around the 1600 block of Diversey. You are correct, I remember having to drive up a inclined driveway and having to drive over the railroad tracks to get into the parking lot.

Thank You rjmachon for the info. I never knew about WBEZ as a source. I've found a number of interesting articles under the Curious Chicago section like the article about how Chicago annexed its neighbors. http://www.wbez.org/series/curious-city/gulp-how-chicago-gobbled-its-neighbors-109583

I found a ad in the Tribune historical database dated 7/16/50. It was a ad for Borden's cottage cheese and listed all the stores that carried it.

Can anybody provide any information about the 6400 block of N. Newark. While riding my bike by St. Adalbert cemetery, I noticed several wooden store fronts in the 6400 block of Newark. One of the lots at 6451 has what has what looks like a old fashioned cooler in the backyard. I was able to find one ad that indicated in the 1950's there was a bakery named Patty Jo's at 6449. There also is stil

While driving down Cicero, I noticed a building with ornate brick work at the top of the building. The building covers several lots. I was just curious as to what may have been originally at that location. Just seemed kind of decorative and made me think that it may have been a department store at one time.

Recently in the WSJ there was a article on a court ruling concerning abandonment of railroad tracks and ownership of the land. This was dealing with Federal land given to the railroads for use of track and right of way and whether the railroads owned the land for other uses. This got me thinking about the ownership of the land of abandoned track here in the Chicago area. Do the railroads reta

Does anybody know whether or not there are still drum and bugle corps. In doing research, I found references in my neighborhood from the 30s and 40s that quite a few of the Boy Scout troops had drum and bugle corps. The Boy Scout troop I belonged to in the 60s, still had the old bass drum. In helping my father clean out old cabinets at the legion hall, we came across several old bugles dating

While reaching something else, I ran across a newspaper article that mentioned a girl scout troop at my parish in the 50s that did not exist when I went to school in the 60s. Does anybody know of a resource or a database of information that would provide information by troop number such as years of operation or who the sponsor may have been? In my case this would be within the city of Chicago.

What was a typical day like in grade school as to how much time was spent on reading, writing, spelling arithmetic etc. My local school grade school emphasizes that they have a "arts" program of art, music, plays etc. I've heard of other CPS schools listed as language academies. My personal opinion is that we have gotten away from the basics of what a grade school should be. It may b

I would like to hear from some former CPS students who went to school in the 60s or prior. WHat interests me are what the conditions were. What brings this to mind is that I live near a school and just saw a delivery from Hinckley water and Rosen's bread. The stories I read in the papers is we don't spend enough, class sizes are too large and we need to provide hot meals or children can't learn

Does anybody know of a resource for old Chicago crime statistics? What I am curious about is when the proliferation of drug and drug related crimes started to rise. What brought this to mind, is that one of my other interests is listening to old time radio programs I download to ,my Ipod. Currently I have been listening to the old Dragnet radio series from the 50's. What surprised me are the

I was recently asked by someone if I knew of any "family style" restaurants in the Rosemont area. Their definiton of family style is a non-chain type of restaurant where you can buy a entree with soup and salad all for one price, sort of like a diner. These types of businesses seem to be disappearing. My assumption this is due to younger people growing up eating at national chains a

Can anybody provide any info on Morning Fields. While driving down Devon I saw the store and stopped in. The signage indicated produce, bakery, meats etc. I was disappointed with what I found. The store appeared to be a shell of what may have been/ Along one wall labeled market, was completely empty except for few baskets of vegetables. The center of the store had all empty shelving. Unless I

The only reference that I can find for the service station was in 1938. It was listed as G&H Service Station with the proprietor being George Wsysinski. Corner of Webster and Leavitt.

I always thought of Chicago as being fairly flat. Was it strictly topography that starting with Addison the streets go over the expressway, while Belmont and east the streets go under the expressway? Is it the Mayfair pumping station or the railroad tracks the reason why you can't go westbound off the Edens on to the Kennedy or go northbound on the Edens off of the Kennedy without the hassle o
