Does anyone know when the city of Chicago demolished hundreds of buildings in this area? 55th to 63rd, MLK west to State. All I can figure is according to NETR online there was a drastic change sometime in the 70s. Now the area consists of entire blocks of vacant lots but just west on Michigan there are many original buildings.

I remember Advance sales on Milwaukee south of North ave. At the time it was where you went to buy appliances, clothes, pretty much everything. They were referred to as "Wholesale Houses" and there were a few around Belmont and central.

I recently was driving thru the South side/west Washington park area and saw a number of houses with a Red X sign. I found out that this designates houses to be demolished. Heck, the area just west of Washington park has had hundreds of buildings demolished over the years and now resembles a wasteland.

Although so much of the scenarios and names in the mov ie were totally fabricated, there was mention of a saloon called "The Hub", on Madison. At one time there was the Community at Harlem and Lawrence and another one right across the street from the harlem Irving Plaza. We went there all the time, these being some of the first "general merchandise" stores, long before KMart and walmarts. There was another store called Zayre at Cumberland and belmont and a number of Turnstyles.

If you were heading east on FPD from Harlem, it was the first left turn you could make into the stores that replaced the long gone Harlem Outdoor.
