That's how the apartment I grew up in was too - gas and electricity to every ceiling box. The gas line went right down the middle of the apartment and nice tree branches to each box while the electric conduit went from box to box haphazardly. There had been gas jets in the back bathrooms until the 40's - they had been used for science experiments by college students. You still see the stubs in Vic

The Brewster was sad inside when I was there for Open House Chicago, not the cleanest and a touch run down. One would have thought that they would have spruced it up a bit for their close up. Friends got married in what may have been one of the sound stages at Essanay, now, what is it, St. Francis' College? That doesn't sound right.

I would have thought that the el was totally separated as a circuit since the current would have had to travel through the pillars down through the ground to the streetcar tracks (or through the embankments or up from the tunnels). My suspicion was it was just cheaper to leave the tracks in place...

I think Wesley's Shoe Corral in the Hyde Park Shopping Center has been in business for 50+ years. The current owner inherited it from his father and he in turn purchased it from a neighbor (or something along those lines).

When did natural gas replace town gas? I'm assuming sometime in the 60's in earnest since that's when the bulk of old coal heating switched to gas (partially pushed by pollution laws partially but easier operation, i.e. no stoking). My building was built with oil heat and town gas ranges in the mid-20's - there is an abandoned flue for the ranges in the kitchen wall.
