Are the entrances from the top of the old stations still accessible or are they also covered up or filled in like the ground level entrances?

Does anyone know how or if it is even possible to get a permit to do something like this legally or without getting into trouble, just in case? Or at least some sort of permission?

Wow! CE thank you for the detailed response too! I thought this thread was just going to be forgotten! :) I have read the Chicago-l.org website on it and that is what got me thinking about possibly going up there. How would I even get a permit to climb up on to it? I was just worried about any street crime or such but you have alleviated some fears too! I do enjoy the pictures of the grou

Last week, driving down Elston, I saw a sight that broke my heart. The old brewery building with that ugly addition to the front is being knocked down. I do not understand why as I thought they were keeping it and remodeling it into condos or lofts. But as I drove by, I saw half of the rear knocked down, with the chimney standing alone, and the front still standing. Does anyone know anything

Hi folks! I was riding by the Dunning Line on Sunday May 20th, by the Brickyard on the NW Side of Chicago, on Fullerton, and as I looked south down the old line I saw a sight never before seen (to me). An entire line of work-train cars lined up on the track from Fullerton all the way down to the main branch where it splits off. Right behind the PetSmart and the Davies Supply. I'll try to get

I do hope that more lines will be remembered, because there are so many here in Chicago, and the better known ones have been done, but some are known but not much more info can be found.

Well I just want to give kudos to thevery well written and very interesting article on the Bloomingdale Line, as it answered quite a few questions, and it peaked my interests quite a bit into the history of the line. It was very informative and just all around, what I came to love about this website. I have a couple of suggestions or requests, if it is allright...... Would it be possible if

Thanks Dunning1! I had no idea that we had so many gas stations so close together on Addison! Plus, thanks for the extra info regarding our neighborhood. I had a feeling the muffler shop on Oak Park and Addison was a former station. My dad said he remembers the old school building on Addison and Narragansett. Fuzzy memories, but he said it all looked quite different. Shekaago, it alwa

one more view. Apparently, North Ave up to Central also would have had a subway tunnel. WOW! looks like it would have followed the Humboldt line, then gone underground. This blows my mind that we could have had such extra infrastructure. Would it have been a good idea?

http://www.chicago-l.org/plans/1939CompSubway.html It talks more in detail regarding the proposed subway systems in 1939. What do you folks think? Can you imagine if we had a subway right on our doorstep? What would it have been like if these plans had gone through? Ahh, alternate reality imagination.

Well, one lead regarding the subway extension! It was part of the 4th Stage of subway expansion in 1939!

Such a shame there are fewer and fewer abandoned tracks like this in Chicago, especially on the NW side. :(

Dunning 1 those are great memories! Somehow, I feel the railroad tracks in a neighborhood like ours made it that much more special and interesting! Kinda of hard to imagine for me seeing a large steam engine puffing its way across Roscoe and Cornelia towards Addison. Is the gas station the same one that used to be on Neenah and Addison? I remember it standing till at least the early 90s.

In which location was the station at? I could just see it now going fast and pulling a Dukes of Hazzard there!

I did see that as well. Its simply amazing they would just leave it up there like that. Now that makes me really want to go climb up and take a look.

222psm, I know what you mean. I just love old railroad tracks. I'm sad to see them go away and get torn up and removed. I wish they would just leave the Bloomingdale line the way it is and not "beautify" it. That is the same structure on 40th and Calumet, and it looks like its just off the tracks. I would just love to go and check it out. Brule Laker Is it a rough area to

Shekkaago, I had no idea there was a Dunning train stop! I do remember maybe back in the early 90s, maybe around 91-92, I remember there used to be a section of railroad track still sticking up on Roscoe before they built the houses there on the sidewalk. As a kid I was so fascinated with these tracks, seemingly right in the middle of the neighborhood. My dad recalls how way back in the

Thank you shekaago but I have seen that thread before. That is what prompted me to look for more, lol! :) I am more interested if anyone has their own photos from around there before all the changes. I know that is probably going to be a lot tougher to find.

Does anyone have any photographs of the old Dunning Line while it was in operation? I cannot find any at all. I remember long ago when i used to go with my dad along the old right of way when it was all still "wild" with trees and shrubs. It was a great little strip to get away from it all. I remember when the Kimbell Factory burned down and was sad to see the right of way remove

And yes I have seen the pictures taken from ground level, but I have yet to see any taken from the embankments themselves.

Hey folks, its been a while since I posted here, good to be back! As i was going through the Chicago-L website and reading and viewing the Kenwood Line, I started to wonder, has anyone actually gone up onto the embankment and seen whats on there? Are the tracks intact, or areas of the old stations intact? Has anyone explored the tops? I know it's probably a dangerous or at least, tough, th

Thank you all very much for the information! Its amazing how the track for racing was right next to it. And you guys did help in unmasking the mystery for me, the empty lot next to Lane. I always thought it was a part of Lane Tech. I love finding such nuggets of interest!

I was always wondering what was on that slab of concrete next to the stadium and off of Rockwell St. It looks like a parking lot, and according to Historic Aerials, there used to be some sort of a building there, but now, there is just an empty fenced off lot. Is it a part of Lane Tech? What was there, and what happened? Also I noticed in the 1938 photo of the area, there was some sort of a
