Holtanek, Have you viewed the area on historic aerials? You can really see the changes over the years. I would have grabbed a few pics but they request payment for their images. I didn't think it'd be right to post them here. I think historic aerials is one of the coolest sites ever! www.historicaerials.com

The pics have to be hosted somewhere, like Photobucket or Flickr. Then you click on the "insert image URL" and paste in the link to the photo.

Thanks for the info about the hot dog place. I remember both Like Young and the Our Dogs place too. You're right about Like Young having good stoner food, I don't think I ever went in there straight. Of course this was many years ago, I don't do any of that anymore. White Castle @ Belmont/Harlem was like that too. Late Friday or Saturday night, it seemed everyone in there was under the influence o

I can't remember what book it was in but did you notice where the Congress line goes underground just east of Halsted there are two extra portals? Supposedly this was either for the CA&E or a reroute of the Lake st line. I don't know how they'd have worked turning then trains around though as the extra portals are dead ends. The same type of thing is on the Lake st section of the subway. Where

I have a few pics, have you seen these? Image 1 is looking east from the former Marshfield station in 1953. Image 2 is at the former Laramie av station and yard. Image 3 is at the former Gunderson av station.

This is a start if you haven't already seen it. http://chicago-l.org/operations/lines/garfield.html I have a video tape somewhere that shows the trains operating on Van Buren st during the Xway construction.

My brother-in-law and I were talking Xmas Eve and this hot dog place came up. Both of us can't remember where it is (or was?) All we know is it was on the NW side, probably near Addison/Harlem. Can anyone help us out? Thanks!

Will Rogers was at Belmont and Parkside, (one block w of Central) don't know when it closed. Luna was on Belmont just e of Cicero. Don't know when it closed either. I went to both and the Montclare during the 60's and 70's.

There were at least 2 more Henry's, one at Fullerton & Central, (now a Mickey D's) and on the 3400 block of N Harlem. The one on Harlem was the original building full of junk a year or two ago, it may have been razed. I don't know why they closed, I wish I did.

Hi all, If you know this area, you have surely noticed that Belmont suddenly gets wider at this intersection. Does anyone know why? Thanks!

As I mentioned in a different post, I worked there briefly in the mid 70's. The odd thing is, I don't ever remember seeing their candy in the stores. They used a lot of coconut, we had to lift 100 lb bags and dump them into huge mixers. The mixers were on the second floor, feeding press type machines on the first floor by gravity. I vaguely remember a "bob bon" type candy and a type of h

There was another one near Grand & Narragansett. Great for late night beer runs! I just checked, it's still there @ 2248 N Natchez.

Those tracks also serviced the former Kimball Candy co on Belmont. I worked there for awhile in the 70's. They shipped sugar and corn syrup via those tracks.

I read with great interest the article here about the former Indian Boundary line. I live near Forest Preserve drive and see how it matches the angle of Rogers av. However, there is an Indian Boundary rd in River Grove that doesn't line up with the other streets. There is another small section of this street on the same angle off of North av just west of 25th av in Melrose Park. Did the Indian Bou

It was on Montrose just east of Cumberland where the Butera is now. I don't know anything about the Brach stuff though.

Use the street address 2400 N Normandy. Pan to the right just a bit. I selected 1962 and it's very clear.

Mike, If you look on historicaerials.com (in the links section) and go back to 1962, you'll see it did end at Touhy. I imagine it was cut off to improve traffic flow. The street that runs through the cemetery is Newark av, it was gated off I believe in the late 80's or early 90's. I would guess it was gated to keep people out, maybe due to vandalism?

There was another one on Belmont just east of Central. Last time I went by there it was two parking lots but I believe this is the location. I just looked at Google Earth and it was at Belmont and Lotus. Does anyone remember a "Y" turnaround at Central and Hutchinson north of Irving Pk rd? If memory serves, the trolley bus had to back in to turn around! There were more of these but i
