Was a building built over it and then torn down? I think it may have been recently 'uncovered' in past 20 years or so, but maybe someone can confirm?

Probably, the current building was built around 1971-2?

According to the Chain Store history website Pleasant Family Shopping, Golden Bear chain was owned by Mongomery Ward. And was sold to Pizza Hut, who unloaded some sites and converted others to PH. One near me is now called Sunmist, a family diner. It's on Lake St near Rt 83 in Addison IL. Maybe the one still called Golden Bear bought the rights to the name?

A lot of younger people call the SW side area 'Midway' nowadays.

The Loft development in the old Weibolts at Lincoln and Ashland should have been named after the store, but is Tower Lofts. It had nice 'Art Deco-ish' letters, 'Wiebolts', on side, but took them down, booo! The Oak Park store was actually in River Forest, kitty corner from Marshall Fields at Harlem and Lake, SW corner. It had 'Art Deco' glass block windows, too bad wasn't remodeled.

The corner building of Z frank is now a Shell. Walgreens built over where "Scottie Pippen Dodge" used to be, just north of Z. Up until the 70's, most of the large car dealers were in the city. The suburban dealers were still small 'country town' dealers in tiny buildings. I looked through a 1963 Sun-Times recently, and 90% of ads were city addresses. Long Chevrolet ushered in th

The building with the lower level stores was built in the early 70's, kinda obvious. The upper right was a 'Just Pants' jeans store, used to buy tons of their stuff.

Most local dealer ads are on cable stations now. On 'free TV', they are on news shows, mostly. Ostrow Dodge was on Irving Park, just west of Kedzie, and then was Foley Dodge. It closed in 2000, and was empty for a few years. Torn down for condos, but took long time to build them out. THere is a ghost sign for Foley Dodge on south side of IP, although being only 18 yrs old, it's still got all it

There's two long time closed FH's in North Side, one on Broadway nw of Foster, and one on Suothport at SW corner of Addison. Still for sale and empty, most of the families moved out, and the yuppies don't patronize them...yet.

At the 1974 Auto Show, Ford was letting people do the car model sales pitch. My mom did a silly act and said 'This is the Ford... what's it called Torino....later call me at PO5-1313'.

They don't make cars like that anymore, since they rusted away earlier. And thanks for the info on National Tea Co.

A few Wiebolt's buildings stood empty for years. Lincoln/Ashland/Belmont, for example, almost 7 years. Finally converted to lofts in 1995-96. At Yorktown Mall in Lombard was empty 5-6 years until Von Maur came in. River Forest, unfortunately was torn down by 1995. Other stores flipped right away. HIP to Carson's, Startford Square to Penny's, and Randhurst to Bergners?

Yes, remeber Ma running to get meat before they closed the counters. Also, remember the big signs saying 'Open Sunday' in late 60's

Yes, it is Chicago-ese to call a movie theater or cinema, 'the show'. And many of these places were called 'the cheap show' for years to see 2nd and 3rd run, long before home videos and cable TV. Luna closed in mid 80's, was torn down for a bank branch, now a Walgreens. . Will Rodgers would often show Disney films, like "Love Bug" and "Million Dollar Duck". But then kids

I remeber alot of fires of businesses in 'changing' areas in late 60's into 70's. My dad would say 'they did it for insurance'. But arson investigations got better by 1980 and fewer occured. That's just my observation, not 100% correct.

Edison Park has been part of Chicago since 1910, annexed before Dunning and Oriole Park. See map in link for dates and areas. http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/3716.html

Cumberland/O'Hare area still had rural parts in 1969-71 when my folks met friends to go riding there. It is too bad the place is now remembered for the murders.

Wikipedia has good write ups on gas brands Cities Service is now Citgo, Clark shrunk from bankruptcy. Lots have been bought out like Gulf and Union 76 . Enco/Esso is now Exxon, which is merged with Mobil. Phillips 66 merged with Conoco. Sinclair sold off N. IL stations to Arco. Texaco, Sunoco, Arco pulled out of Chicagoland. BP now owns Arco which is how AM-PM name is now back here. Maratho

There was a Certified Store in the old Downtown of Warrenville IL, owned by Soukup family. My grandmother bought everything there and mostly store brands, Country's Delight and Raggedy Ann, It was tiny compared to today's huge stores! But it carried the basics and no need for huge aisles of 2 liter bottles of pop and chips. A similar Certified was 'Boulevard' on Irving Park near Austin. Ha

The amazing thing in the past 45 years is how much taller the buildings are and the extent of the high rises. From the Loop to about Lincoln Park, it is like a slighlty smaller Manhatten.

Edison Park is like an island of the city near Niles and Park Ridge. But it has been part of Chicago longer than many of the other fringe neighborhoods.

The Hub in Norridge became the Axle and there were others with same name. Radio ads said 'Rollin at the Axle'.

Id say the West and South sides declined, but the NW side has thrived and many homes for sale now say 'close to Kennedy' in ads. Cities in general declined with people able to afford a new house after years of poverty during the Depression. Can go back and forth whether highways ruined cities. But, even if they were not built, more commuter rail would have been instead. And that would still

One clue is the Cadillac dealer across the street. My guess is Madison St in Oak Park near Ridgeland Ave. There was a Caddy dealer there for years, and it looks like it.

The old 'S curve' was built for Model T size cars. By the 50's was grossly outmoded. It was awful, had to slow down to near 1 mph to turn and not hit the next car over.
