The Boston Store was a big department store on State around Monroe. If you stand around State and Washington and look south you will see "Boston Store" painted on the side of a building on the west side of State Street.

I've seen it myself in the past.

When did it close?

The Boston Store closed in July 1948. Here is link to a short write-up about the store. I love how they say the interior "reeked with a quaint Victorian mustiness."

Wonder how that sign has mannaged to remain for so long without it being totally worn off?

Yes, I can't help but wonder how it managed to stay so clear.

Was a building built over it and then torn down? I think it may have been recently 'uncovered' in past 20 years or so, but maybe someone can confirm?

I remember when I first started working downtown in 1978 and was taking the Midway Park 'n Ride Express bus (anyone remember that one?). It travelled down the Stevenson and then all the way down State St. I seem to remember seeing a Boston Store sign back then although I would have sworn it was on the east side of the street facing south. The reason I even took note of it was that my mother had always talked about the Boston Store and when I saw this sign, remembered her stories. Anyone know if there was another sign along there - perhaps the building was torn down or built up or something? This one that we are discussing is located on the west side of the street with a northern exposure.

Couldn't of been.

I can remember seeing this sign early in the 90's.

It just may have been painted with high quality paint to stay up a long time, when originally done. Boston Store had no idea they'd close someday.
