The one near 6 corners seemed to be replaced by a round cage like structure, and then nothing. I'd say 1971-73?

I know exactly what you are talking about, and I think they were actaully for People's Gas. There was one at the People's Gas site near 6 Corners in Portage Park, and one on Goose Island. See a pic of the Goose one if you search in Chicago History Mueseum site pics of Goose Is.

The first episode was filmed Washinton Square Pk, near north side Clark St and Walton St. Its only one I saw, in 1981. Some of the actors were familiar from local commercials. Not like Empire man, but some lady in Jewel? ads.

My guess is demand for new housing for city workers is pushing contruction in the 'suburban' areas of Chicago. Same with far NW side too.

Along 65th, on the city side, condos are going up in place of parking lots for the Bedford Park businesse. Seems to be a better use of land. City messed up years ago in not grabbing all the land that went to Bedford and Burbank, etc.

Supposed to eventaully build an underpass for 63rd st under Harlem and the RR, but who knows when? SunTimes had a list of RR crossing projects posted a few years ago, and some are done like Grand Ave in Franklin Park, but most not started yet

For a long time, the far NW side areas of Dunning, Norwoord Park and Ohare had side streets with no curbs or sewers. They were called WPA roads and were finally updated in 70s and 80s, now all citified.

The last operating farm in the city was turned into the Agricultual School in early 80's. It's on south side of 111th st between Pulaksi and Hamlin. I'd also say the Lake Calumet area on SE side is most, maybe only rural part. Up until the early 70's the far NW "O'hare neighborhood" around Bryn Mawr/Foster and Cumberland/East River Rd was rural, with some cornfields and Evelyn La

This short street is actually in Clearing, but there is an spur of Harlem Ave that is a side street with houses on one side, from 65th street north for a block. The real Harlem curves and heads over the Bedford Pk tracks. It's the edge of Chicago, staking its claim saying 'this is ours!'

For long time, under the viaducts of Irving Park Rd. were exposed trolly tracks. But then whole new roadbeds were put in under these bridges to give trucks more clearance.

Concord PL continues on the city grid into the North Austin area. There is a 1/2 mile stretch between Cicero and Laramie.

I know a lot about the Ike and JFK route #'s. For one, 1979 was when the Ike was renumbered as I-290. And the JFK was 90/94 to Edens, and 90 to Woodfield. Previously, the Ike extention was finished around 1960 from 294 to York Rd/Lake St and was I-90. From there to future site of Woodfield, I-90 was labeled 'under construction' until 1970. At same time, NW Tollway from JFK to IL 53 was l

Well, blame TV, VCR's, DVDs, Plasma/big screen TVs. cable and the net. Kinda hard to save all of them. Sure would be nice if all still in busniess, but they need filled seats.

Tons of old White Hens are now re-branded' to 7-11 or a 'Joe's Pantry'. Some White Hen's are staying, since they are close to a previous 7-11, so they can 'corner the market'. [7-11 owns them now, btw] I see Circle K's, which are all over the Southwest, are popping up in Shell stations. Maybe more to come?

That Dad's Root Beer ad is from my old 'hood. Remember seeing it all the time when it was 'newer' and took it for granted. Now, I see it and go "oh cool its still there"! The old Dad's factory has been converted to condos, at Diversey and JFK. At least not torn down! ================================================= It's Addison Street, by the way. The only north side e-w arter

Used to walk to the OP at Central and Grace [3800n] to get milk. Turned 7-11 in 1971, and then moved. Now is doc office, but can still see a few of them around area, and some still re-use the oval signs,

It was not a part of the dead Crosstown Xway at all. Too narrow for one thing. There are newspapaer articles about it, and last I remember seeing it was maybe 1987? Talking about the old Brickyard site, I remember seeing new Ford Falcons [1968-69?] on the hill there, did a car dealer use it as storage? They tried to make a ski hill there in like 1969-70, and never happened. Then we know the

I'm from NW side and closer to O'Hare are cul-de-sacs and short streets. There is Joyce Ct, off of Melvina near Irving Park, maybe 1/4 block long. And Castle Island av near Lawrance an Cumberland. But then again, most of the Ohare, Edison and Norwood Park area is a salad bowl of short non-grid streets.

In old maps, the Ogden name disappered from US 34 in Naperville where it bends south. At least since 1985, US 34 is called Ogden all the way into Aurora and Kendall Co. In Oswego is the end of the name, ;-/

There used to be a short street called Longmeadow Av, It was off of Devon Av by the Edens. Longmeadow was a continuation of a street from Lincolnwood into Chicago for a few feet and ended at intersection of Lenox and Ionia Av, maybe one or two car lengths. It was featured once by Lee Phillip on Channel 2. Supposedly the intersection was 3 streets, but didn't make sense, since it didn't have a
