The three aticles I have are pdf files. Unfortuately, they exist on my computer, not on a site to which I can link. Can you access me via a private message on this site? If not, I'll post a usable email address.

Allow me to respond to my own posting...thanks to a tip I located three articles about this in the Chicag Tribune archives. Unless I am mistaken, there's no way to post the pdf files here. That said, I'd be happy to send them to anyone who might be interested.

I grew up in the Lakewood/Balmoral area of Edgewater. About 1955-1956 a bomb was detonated at the NE corner of Lakewood/Catalpa, sometime after midnight. It (rather instantly) killed the guy who was carrying it. There was talk it was meant for the house on the SE corner. We walked past the site on the way to school in the morning. The police and/or coroner had already picked up the larger piec

Anyone remember Rocky's and/or its owners? Absolutely the best fried shrimp. It was located more or less at the base of Navy Pier on the south side. There was a small building and a trailer. It was run by a couple guys of Greek descent. I believe Chris was the father. Don't recall his son's name. It closed during the winter months. The shrimp was served in paper bags. Great spot on summer

Anyone recall the name of the restaurant on Caldwell (?) near the railroad tracks that served the giant ice cream sundaes? They might have been called Giant Killers. In the 60's they were $5.00 and were large enough for 5-6 people.

The Woolworths on Bryn Mawr just east of Broadway had a lunch counter along one wall. Other than that, what I rememeber most are tables/counters spread throughout the store. The tops were segmented into smaller bins and were filled with trinkets, sewing items, etc.

I worked the Democratic Convention at the Amphitheater in 1968. The place was crawling with flies. Also, and having grown up in the convention/tradeshow business, I worked many a tradeshow there.

I grew up 5400 north on Lakewood. As kids (1950's/1960's) we'd frequently venture on our bikes north on Clark Street up to Devon. There was a small plaza atop on which sat two WW II era tanks, one of which you could enter from beneath. Can anyone tell me if they are still there. If not, when were they removed and what became of them, Thanks.

Late in grammar school, circa 1961 or so, we'd walk to Wrigley Field (from Lakewood/Balmoral area). Memory serves, we'd arrive about 9:00 AM, There would be 30 - 40 kids. We'd be taken into the park and start picking up the trash from the previous day's game. This would continue until just before the start of the game. For the work, we'd get an Unreserved Grandstand ticket for that game or an

I recall attending a few wrestling matches at Marigold Arena. Just as hokey then as now. It was, however, great fun. The personalities of the day were "wrestlers" known as Seaman Art Thomas (ggod guy) and Haystacks Calhoun (billed at 601 lbs.).

I think it was called the International Trade Fair and I worked in one of the booths (Brazil). At that time it was at McCormick Place. Have to assume it was the pre-fire original McCormick Place. Perhaps it moved to Navy Pier after the 1967 fire. A lot of tradeshows did after the fire. I remember the ski show between McCormick and Meigs Field. Another highlight was the guy wearing the &quo

Anyone remember Binyon's? My dad would take me there once a year or so for lobster. Soo good. Seem to recall it being at the south end of the loop, on a second floor maybe.

Newbie here. Remember Skip's Fiesta well. Still early in high school, I didn't have the money for a fast car (come to think of it I didn't ghave the money for ANY car at the time), but loved going out there. Couple years and a GTO later I found myself at the local dragstrips. Hit them all. Favorites were Great Lakes and Lake Geneva, but I think I eventually raced at all of them...Oswego, U.S
