YESS YES: I lived at 5042 s. Wolcott in the 40's and 50's. My Dad got his bottle from there and I have been in there . It was I think Robey's Tavern named after the softball team and old Damen Ave. Next door was the robey athletic cub then Jim's candy store.

My Father in Law owned it from around 1960 until it closed in the mid 80's. We have the old 1910 Brunswick pool table from there in our basement. The softball team he sponsored was "Al's Pal's".I helped him clean out the place when he sold it to some guy,who used it to store old fridges,stoves...etc.There were two apartments upstairs that shared a bathroom in the hall.

Rich, I remember going to the dentist at 51st & Damen upstairs on the second floor.(northwest corner)There was a small bowling alley across the hall from the dentist. The downstairs was a restaurant named Gus's. The dentist's name was Kowal or Kowalski.
Was the Tastee-Freeze on 52nd or & Damen there while you lived on Wolcott?
How about Al's bait shop on 53rd & Damen? my friend & I used to sell him night crawlers. We used to buy our BB's from him for our guns.

Kostrubala was a Doctor or Dentist in the building on the northeast corner of 51 and Damen. There is a dentist by the name of Dostrubala now at 95th and Central. A son I think.

Re: Orphanage in NIles and Our Lady of Angels Neighborhood

I'm wondering if anyone on this site knows the name of a Catholid orphanage that was located in Niles. My mother was in this orphanage in the early 1920s. This building was later turned into a Catholic seminary and then a nursing home. When I was in high school, I used to take the Milwaukee Avenue bus all the way to the end of the line and walk the rest of the distance. I am wondering what the name was when it was an orphanage and if there any records that I can find on it.

Also, I'm looking for pictures of the Our Lady of the Angels neighborhood from as far back as the early 20th century and on. I would like to see what the neighborhood looked like back in the day and how it's changed. I used to live not so very far from there in the 1950s and would like to see some pictures from back then.

If anyone has any information, I sure would appreciate it. I'm trying to find something on line, and I'm not the best "researcher", but I'm trying very hard to locate this information. I would appreciate anything that anyone can come up with to lead me into any information on the above 2 subjects. Thanx very much to everyone out there. I truly appreciate it.

Do you mean St. Hedwig's Orphanage on Harlem behind St. Adalbert's cemetery.
I was also known as the "Polish manual training school for boys" and the "St. Hedwig's industrial school for girls"

@ mphansen, PKDickman is correct. The name of the orphanage is St. Hedwig's Orphanage Niles, IL. Here is a picture of it,

http://www.idaillinois.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/posttest/id/1077/rec/2

The orphanage closed in 1960 and it became Niles College until 1995. Just Goggle, St. Hedwig's Orphanage Niles, IL. and you can find out more info on it.

The ice cream parlor on the northwest corner of 51st and Damen was called Manuso's. Above it on the second floor was a dentist, Dr. Osinkis. Across the hall from the dentist's office was the Jay-Bee bowling alley, where my older brother worked as a pinsetter. Next to the dentist's office was the office of an attorney, Jim Smejkal. I hung around 48th and Hermitage at Ray Kaczkowski's drugstore on the northeast corner. I got out of Tilden Tech high school just in time to walk over to Ray's and meet my girlfriend as she was getting out of St. Joseph's high school. When we got older, all my buddies and I hung out at Malacina's tap on the southwest corner of 48th and Wolcott. Attended many great neighborhood dances at School Hall at 48th and Honore. It was a great neighborhood back then, but now it's wrecked.

The tavern on the southwest corner of 50th and Wolcott was called Ruzicka's. The Mundane's S.A.C. used to hold their meetings in the back room there. That back room was also rented out for wedding showers, etc., back in the 40's, 50's and early 60's.

I grew up on 50th & Oakley. Dr. Oshinkis was our dentest. I remember he was drilling and the bit was laying up against my tongue. Didn't feel the pain until the novacaine wore off. Hurt like hell. Went back and he gave me candy to suck on. Those were the good old days. I had a girl friend who lived on 51st & Hermitage. I went to St Michaels graduated in 59.
