Just to show you how much my own perception of the city and its buildings have changed - in that second to last picture, I was looking at all the smaller buildings trying to figure out where Marina Towers were! Not realizing that there they are - the focal point towering over eveything else. I'm so used to them now, being dwarfed by all the others. And to think I was up on the roof of the Towers - the observation deck, when they first opened.

What it was, who knows. But by 1963 it was clearly not in use anymore because of the parked car on the tracks!

Great work on all the skyline pics. I had almost the identical take on the photo as bwalsh in finding Marina Towers lost in the crowd. I imagine that more than a couple of members out here had to the opportunity to visit the Prudential Bldg observation deck ( The Top of the Rock) after the structure was built in the 50s over IC air rights. About 45 stories in height it was tallest in the city. The views from that vantage point were incredible, we could see all the way out to the gas holding tank near my north side home.

Here's a few taken on the eve of 3/20/10...sorry about the focus, was taken from a passing car. The green lights are the "observation deck"

The old style hand holds and teardrop lightbulbs.. I hope they kept some for a museum, etc... About the cars. Sturdy weren't they? In my perfect world, they'd be sturdy again plus smart and green [non-polluting]
The next photo with the Marina City towers...The photo was obviously taken before Channel 7 put their tv transmitter antenna on top of one of them.

Safe to say, that corner has been completely reconstructed and isn't even close to resembling anything in the 63' view. Plus, no way would a car parked on even abandoned tracks and partially blocking the street be safe from the CPD tow brigade these days.
Those RR tracks probably weren't in use in 63', but my guess is that at some point they ran partially westbound down Fulton, and snaked due NW behind the Braun Bottling plant.

Here's the exact opposite view...looking west from Marina Towers...1975
this view is from the opening credits of the film "Cooley High"...
you can see the white 6 story building on the SW corner of Fulton and Canal is still intact, as is the Braun Bottling Plant on the NW corner.
also, if you look really closely, you'll see tracks above and directly west of the Braun Bottling Plant. There's a thin brown or tan image there thats obviously a locomotive. Directly west of that, is the building that was at approximately 550 W Fulton, that was built at an angle to accomodate Milwaukee Ave (now dismantled south of Kinzie).. this picture was taken in 75', and although you can't see it, Milwaukee Ave between Fulton and Kinzie would have been up and running.

I wonder if the track ran into that 6 story building, it looks like a large door on the lower right hand side. Or if it curved to the Braun Bottling Plant. But from that view it's too hard to tell. Thanks captain for posting that opposite view.

Good call, I think you're right. It looks like a pretty narrow opening, so maybe it was some kind of skip loader/transport car, similiar to what was run underground back in the day to transport materials throughout the Loop.
In the first "Goldstein" picture there's a Buick parked across what looks like a short "street", so that was probably the entryway to that opening of the building

Are those actually el cars in the shot of the lake street el or North Shore Line cars? I can't quite tell, but there don't appear to be enough doors for it to be the el.

From what I could dig up, the North Shore Line stopped running the interuban line early in 1963. I believe Goldstein was filmed sometime in mid 63'
Also, it's quite possible those "L" cars in the Goldstein pic are the old 4000 series. Built in the 20's and in service into the 70's. 1964 was the first year the new alpine white and mint air conditioned cars were used.

I remember those old cars, my mom used to take us to a doctors' office on the west side of Broadway, north of Montrose and those old cars were stored on the L behind the building. The old Lakewood tracks still were in place along Graceland Cemetery.
I'm almost sure the Lakewood bridge was still in place over Montrose, but in not 100% sure. Does any body know when the bridge was removed?

Here are a few things I found on that old Lakewood bridge over Montrose, 222psm. I know this is way off topic but wanted to try to answer at least a part of your question as I love this kind of rail history stuff.
The old Lakewood track right-of-way between the eastern wall of Graceland Cemetery and the CTA Red Line tracks and on the south side of Montrose is now Challenger Park inside of which is a nice little dog park.

The Chicago Department of Transportation removed it as part of an improvement project on Montrose. The bridge itself was preserved, and brought to the Illinois Railway Museum two days later as three 15-foot wide loads. IRM planned to use it to bridge a creek.[/i]
