My Grandfather owned this building at the northwest corner of Milwaukee and Racine. His business, F&H Catering, was located in back until some time in the 60s. The inscription at the top of the turret reads "J Dinet 1857" or maybe "J Binet 1857." The building is gone and the location has condos. Any other information would be appreciated.

It is interesting to note that in the book -- History of Chicago, Volume 1 by Alfred Theodore Andreas (1884-86 edition) -- the author mentions, under "Street Nomenclature", a street named: "Dinet, after J.Dinet (this street is extinct)".
In the 1863 map of Chicago: shows Dinet Street:

Dinet Street (was an east/west street) is shown located just south of North Avenue, between Elston Avenue and McHenry (now changed to Throop Street) --- see map coordinates 3C.

This may also be related information; a Joseph Dinet, according to these Chicago Directories, lived within a short distance from J. Dinet building:
1866 & 1870 -- 391 Milwaukee Avenue ( 727 adjusted for 1909 address change)
1871 -- 391 & 393 Milwaukee Avenue ( 393 changed to 729 adjusted for 1909 address change)
1880 -- 547 Milwaukee Avenue ( 879 adjusted for 1909 address change) Dinet occupation jeweler.
Also, I found this from other sources:
Joseph Dinet was born in France. (1871 Directory)
Joseph Dinet, was a "prominent candy manufacturer."
Joseph Dinet died in 1884, leaving an estate worth $300,000.

In addition to the Chicago Daily News photos, another place where many of these old Chicago photos reside is the Library of Congress. Also on line is the IDOT collection. Thousands of old Chicago photos from these two sites.
And don't forget the Cushman Collection. GREAT color photos from the 1940s and 1950s.
Lastly, there are sellers of Chicago news photos on Ebay. While these are now watermarked or produced in low res for selling, some are still worthy of downloading. Several of us downloaded thousands of these before the sellers started watermarking.

I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but you haven't seen anything until you view the work of Vivian Maier. Her work, to me, is one of the most important finds
ever. WTTW (Jay Shepsky, "Jay's Chicago") has run a Maier documentry a few times, and it always gives me goosebumps.

I was afforded a treat to see Maier's work in a gallery. I was ignorant of it until I went to see a friend's showing in the same gallery. Just amazing photographs. They get a bit depressing later in her life but still just great slices of life in the city.
