Richard,

It's not called the "Back of the Yards Journal" anymore. Several years ago they changed the name to the "Journal News". The offices for the paper used to be located in Back of the Yards, in a strip mall near 47th and Damen but currently it's being published out of the offices at 7019 West Archer in Garfield Ridge. The paper covers the area from Garfield Ridge east through Back of the Yards. The same group also publishes the "City Newshound". It's a free paper that is often distributed in the libraries and various newspaper boxes.

I delivered that paper off and on around 1950 until about 1953. I don't really remember how I was paid, but what Richard sais sounds about right. I know it wasn't very much. I delivered in the area of 55th to 59th and Ashland to Wood. As I recall, it came out on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

I remember the office of the paper being at 46th and Ashland. That was when the strip mall at 47th and Damen was the site of the yearly Free Fair.

All correct and I probably saw you when we checked in our money.

You know I don't remember how we picked up the papers and how we collected. I don't remember going to 46th and Ashland. Maybe there was an auxiliary office in my immediate neighborhood, which was generally St. Basil Parish.

I also delivered the Southwest News Herald, which I picked up at a store at 56 and Wood or Hermitage. Later I delivered the Herald American and collecting for that was a real chore.

To the best of my knowledge it originally did end at 55th/Garfield Blvd., but at some point, around 1949 or so it was formally extended to 59th simply in order to take in all of St. Basil parish. We moved there in 1949, and we always were always included in Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council. There were a few of us that delivered the Journal in that area.
