Yeah, that's definitely the Mart @ 4:58. It looks like the Civic Opera Building on the far right of the frame.

The Vogue Ballroom was once part of a huge complex which included the Vogue and Chateau Theatres...the complex contained movie theatres, a ballroom, bowling alley , billiard halls and apartment..all that remains is the seedy Chateau Hotel at 3838 N Broadway.

They demolished that half because another more extensive fire damaged the Brown & Koppel Restaurant main partition in early 1976. There was a fire there once, The second time was more extensive I guess. Yes, It was pretty unwise to demolish the western half, IMO.

"The Chateau Hotel? Omigod! We were asked if we wanted the room by the HOUR or were we staying all night? The sheets had different names stamped on them from the pillow cases, from the towels, from the soap and NONE of them said Chateau. I think the bathroom was a mold farm. The first thing I did when we got to the room was kill a spider the size of a hubcap with my hairspray. We were only there for an overnight adventure so we thought it would be good enough to crash in after partying all night. Wrong! There were noises coming from the room next door that appeared to be a wounded chimpanzee. That went on for hours and the desk (The dirty man in a t-shirt behind bulletproof glass) never answered his phone. And the bars on the

I also noticed the old Glazer's Prescriptions (now a mini mart) at 959 N.Ashland. Strangely enough, It had a painted billboard ad for Jay's Potato Chips. When during the 1960's-80's it had a posting for the pharmacy. I also noticed a nightly trek down the 1500 block of W.Chicago at night, With the old Finkelstein's Juvenile Shop neon sign.

I was wondering how screen grabs of M Squad episodes are accomplished? Thanks for any tips.
In watching enough of the M Squad episodes, I notice the opening sequence (not the first episodes) was filmed at Chicago and Clark. The cars travel west on Chicago then turn north on Clark. This corner was also used in some daytime B roll shots too.

In daytime B roll shots, he travels south on Clark in front of 800 N. Clark, which is the building on the corner of the opening (at that time, there was a Pixley & Ehlers Restaurant on the NW corner).

Something I've noticed. If one looks closely at the [b]daytime[/b] close up shots of the M Squad police station the lights to the left and right of the main door say, "M SQUAD." However, when they have a [b]nighttime[/b] close up shot of Ballinger in front of the main door of the police station, the lights to the left and right say, "POLICE."
Just a thought, but was thinking by the time the series was shot, that Racine Avenue police station was ready for demolition and perhaps had no electricity. So, when they needed a night shot of the police station, they went to a fully active station....which of course, didn't have M Squad at the front door but did have a lit "POLICE" sign at the front.

the furthest south M-Squad location...79th and S South Chicago Ave...rare view of the Avalon Theatre (later became the Regal, now New Regal) in the background...Ballinger comes north on South Chicago Ave, and is making a turn west on 79th, under the Stony Island overpass...

I've noticed the nightime lighted "Police" signs at night shoots as well. I've also noticed the "Police" signs, unlit, and during the day shoots.
The earlier episodes, Season 1, has these "Police" signs unlit and during the daytime. Most of the episodes from Season 1 aired in late '57 and in "58, so more than likely they were filmed in '57 and the earlier part of '58, in which case the Superior and Racine Station may still have been in use, or at least had live electricity.
So if thats the case, one possible theory could be that the operable Racine station had the "Police" signs intact to the left and right of the door, and were usable day and night. Once the scenes were filmed in the operable station, they continued to use that footage throughout the remainder of the three seasons the series ran.
So, once the Racine Station became abandoned and earmarked for demolition, the "M-Squad" monikers were posted on either side, and were probably not wired to be lit. I've watched most of the episodes and I've never seen the "M-Squad" signs lit.

I was reading the "north side 777" postings and the Racine police station came up, I found this: http://chgopdfan.tripod.com/id10.html
It shows a list of district stations, from 1943 and 1955. District #29 West Chicago 731 N Racine phone # MO 6-1702, notice districts 3,4.and 21 are "closed down" in the 1955 list. But # 29 is still active, I think shortly after 1955 this station was abandoned and the M Squad crew could have used the interior to film.

I read an interview online with Lee Marvin from around the time M-Squad was being filmed and I remember him saying that they came into Chicago only twice a year to film exteriors...no permits, nothing...so with that being said, its questionable as to whether they would be able to use the interior of the Superior/Racine station

Pulled this off the internet about district 29 and their new building replacing the 731 N. Racine building. The date of the newsletter is September 1960. Go to the last page...

There was some scene with a "PARK" sign at night, For some parking around Dearborn????????. Near the Wrigley bldg, At least in the background????????????. Where was THAT place???????????.
