As to the second picture on this topic I just want to make note as to the Building name with the Admiral sign. It was NOT called the BCBS building.

It was the Hibbard, Spence, Bartlett and Company Building (1926) 14 floors.
Architect: Graham, Anderson, Probst & White.
@211 East North Water Street, Chgo. later named Mandel-Lear (1970-1989).
It was demolished in early 1989.

Lt Ballinger riding west from Michigan and Wacker 1959..view east...Blue Cross Blue Shield Building in background, with giant Admiral TV sign on south face. I believe the Sheraton is now at the approximate site. There are a few night views of the signage lit throughout the series

thanks for the follow-up. Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett and Company was a hardware distributor later purchased by Cotter/True Value.

the Mandel-Lear building was used by the Chicago Public Library as a temporary location while the current library (Harold Washington Library) was being constructed.

RE the Kopper Kettle scene...there was one on the north side of Randolph, one or two doors east of Dearborn. In that screencap, I believe you can see the marquee of the Woods Theater just west of there.

Just found this site. I use to run in and out of the police station as a young
boy. In two episodes, looking down Superior street you can see my grand mothers apartment. The building my family lived in had already been demolished.

A couple questions gglow...

Do you recall any filming at the station?... or when they demolished it?

The shooting down Superior was looking east...which apartment was your grandmother in?

Where was your family's demolished building?

Interesting side note. I noticed that the filming of the outside of the station looking southeast (the building on the SE corner of Superior and Racine) shows the corner building apparently ready for demolition. No windows!

Here is a view of the building on the SE corner of Superior and Racine, in the background...Looks like its a store with apartments above..Hard to tell whether its prepped for demolition.

There is a much better segment where the camera was right near Superior and Racine looking SE and shows the whole superior side of the building sans windows.

We moved in May of 1957 and missed the filming. Twoof my old friends, whose father own the four store on the south side of Superior (1147 first floor)
got to see the filming. MY grandmother lived on the second floor of that
building. I live @ 1145 the building to the east. The build on that corner
had a tavern on the first floor. Across from the station was a play lot that
dead ended Superior st. on the west, it stop on the east at May st. sort
of a private one block street.

That playlot was on the SW corner of Superior and Racine, diagnally across from the police station. What's odd is that if you look at the Historic Aerial view, two homes, a couple of doors south of that playlot survived the Kennedy demolition and are still standing.

I can't point to an actual episode, but shots looking south down Racine and a bit west show those still-standing buildings.

Current views of still standing structures...the Racine Police station would have been roughly up the embankment on the outbound ramp near where the cluster of small shrubs are.

Actual there are three buildings one is in the back. From what I heard, when I was young my friends Father took title to those buildings. It was some kind of a trade for the 1147 Superior building and one on Chicago ave. Also some time
later their older brother bought the building across the alley facing Huron st.

Some info on the residents around Superior and Racine in 1929, Polk Directory

Racine Ave listings 1929 Polk Directory Chicago by captain54_01, on Flickr

Looks like the tavern on the SE corner of Superior and Racine may have been there in 1929. Spelled "Pawlak" @ 727 N Racine. Or maybe the Pawlak's lived in the building and opened a tavern later. Someone with a more updated directory would know.

The Polk Directory is slightly off though as far a where Superior intersects. Superior intersects @ 731 N Racine, where the police station was, not 738, as listed. 730 and 732 are on the NW corner of Superior and Racine.

Also interesting is that almost every single resident on the block was of Polish descent

The big question is: Was the Superior and Racine Police station abandoned when M-Squad was filmed? From all the research I've done, the station was vacant, and probably most of the residences/businesses/industry spots in the area. It's really a testament to the fact that the city wanted nothing to do with the M-Squad crew. Out of all the police station exteriors in the city, the only available one was one earmarked for demolition.

I remember noticing an odd couple of clips of the "POLICE" lights at the entrance of the station. In the early clips of the show, the lights were lit at night, in the later clips, the lights were dark. Meaning later on in the series the power to the the building was possibly already shut down

I lived across the street from the 29 police district at Racine and Superior. I remember when they shot the scenes at the station.
