I think YOU, might be confused even with 3 and 4. 4 will confuse you with FOR and the new 390 route could mean its lined with trees. (just kidding pal)

Halfday dragstrip was on an old airport runway about a mile northwest of the town. I raced there in 53/54. Not sure when it closed. I believe Andy Granatelli ran the operation, as well as the stock car races at Soldier Field a little earlier.Google it and i think you'll find some pictures. There was also Meadowdale Speedway for the road racers.

A good example of maps jumping the gun is the Elgin/O'hare expressway which was shown on the maps for many years connecting Irving Park to Thorndale, but the airport cancelled that out.

Funny how many kids carried a pocket knife around back then without many crimes being commited. Many of them in the top of your hightops? We called it Mumblety Peg and thats probably spelled wrong too.

Took my first drivers exam on Diversey around Narragansett in 1950. I believe the Elston facility around Bryn Mawr was originally the Safety Lane where you went to get screwed into getting a safety sticker for your car which was required by Chicago. Didn't last much longer into the 50s. Hated putting $2.00 on the seat in order to pass.

I lived directly behind the streetcar barns on Addison. Ran through the empty cars many times. The fence ran along the alley behind the barns and easy to get over when we were kids. Streetcars ran on Elston, but they also parked trolley busses there. Geo.

Anybody remember the open field that ran from Kimball to Kedzie on Addison st. and south all the way to the tracks? There was a golf driving range at Kedzie and once in a while someone would open up some other place like an archery range. Sometimes they trained dogs there on Sundays. A great hotdog stand was on the corner of Addison and Kimball and Pat and Franks White Fire gas station was across

The driving range was next to the lane stadium on the South side of Addison. The golf Course, Windy City, was on the North side directly across from Lane. It was taken over when WGN built their new studio over on Waveland.I think you guys are getting old ??? Geo.

Windy City golf course was on the north side of Addison directly across from Lane. Had a 6' wooden fence all along the place but from the upper floors of Lane you could watch the golfers across the street. Riverview Speedway was already closed when i went there but the Greyhound roller coaster went north almost to the Speedway until the park closed. I think the name was changed to the Comet. Upper

Back to the reason that the overpass was built,it really had nothing to do with Riverview since the main entrance to Riverview was North of the end of the overpass at Roscoe. The problem was Clybourn.Ave. Too many ways to turn off of clybourn. The overpass stopped that problem by letting Western ave. flow through.Made it a lot easier for foot traffic to cross that intersection to get to the park.

Thanks much on that PK. Van Scchaack rings a bell now.As kids, we used to walk past that spooky place and climb on the "chemical hills" on the west side of the old buildings. Kids from every neighborhood around there were climbing over those smelly hills. They were about 20 or 30 feet high with wood beams sticking out in layers. Looked like melted buildings. When we got home, Ma knew exa

No different in any city. The prefex 2,3,4,5 etc. just means its a bypass route to eliminate traveling through the main part of a city. If your on 290 going around Chicago, eventually you will be back to 90. 90 is an east/west route across the country and the bypasses in every state it goes through will have a prefex to allow you to skip the city traffic. Check 75 to Florida, or 80 to California.

How many of you remember Halfday Drag Strip just west of the town of Halfday. Used to run my 48 ford coupe there on Sundays. I believe Grancor automotive ran the place.

We had both the snowman and the santa clause setting on our porch for many Christmas's. Correction though, they didn't GIVE them away with a purchase, they still cost you an additional 5 bucks. Geo.
