Remember the Ground Round well as many other locations. They changed the atmosphere and their idea didn't last long. Harlem Irving also had the drive in theatre with flea markets on Sunday. It was across the street east of the HIP. https://www.flickr.com/photos/eisenhowerpubliclibrary/8148867274/in/photostream/

St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr at 5352 West Belden St. use to have for many years a carnival in back of the church. The carnival was very popular and packed in the people from the neighborhood and other neighborhoods. They had bingo, games, Polish Polka bands, dancing and the beer was flowing. You would see kids at the carnival early but at night it turned into almost just adults. I think with

I remember well the Jewel Grand Bazaar on Kostner & Grand. The store was very busy all the time as well as the Grand Bazaar at the Brickyard Mall. There were probably other Grand Bazaar stores I am unaware of. I can remember the Venture store also at that location. But I was told before building that shopping center at Grand & Kostner it was a car dealer of some sort. Behind the shopping c

Fun topic and brings back good memories of my dad teaching me how to skate. We use to skate at Blackhawk Park, 2318 North Lavergne Ave. just southwest of Fullerton & Cicero. In the summer when young my grandpa took me to Blackhawk Park to watch 16 inch softball.

Thanks for posting the snowman. That brings back good memories of Christmas gone by. What you mentioned about it falling apart, I found the Santa Claus sitting in somebody's trash about 4 years ago. I thought I found a treasure till I got close to it. It was cracked in many places and the back of the Santa was almost completely gone.

Not to get off the subject about Polk Brothers stuffed toy. But Polk Brothers for many years gave away at Christmas season if you bought a appliance a big plastic Santa Claus or Snowman. You had the choice of one or the other. They always displayed them in their windows right after Thanksgiving. They were very popular and displayed in front of houses for decoration. I use to see them a lot in Chic

Right at the corner of Milwaukee & Washtenaw across the street from Bubbleland is a closed Family Dollar store that moved north a few blocks. That building sure looks like a former chain grocery.

Remember the Holiday, Corral bowl very much. They had open bowl very late nights on Saturday. As a kid remember bowling there at 1:00 AM then sleeping on the way home. Forest View Bowl in Des Plaines on River Rd. was another one now gone. Interesting about the Catholic Church lanes.

Thanks for all the information. But I know this intersection very well since the days the Jewel was open on Belmont & Pulaski. The Jewel Store like the one on Grand & Kostner puzzles me. They were both very busy stores and why they closed I have no idea. I know Florsheim was across the street. My grandfather died on Pulaski & Belmont in 1937. A article is written in the Chicago Tribune

2 Jewel Stores and wondering what occupied the property? The former now closed Jewel on Belmont & Pulaski was it houses or industry? The other Jewel on Milwaukee Ave. & Ashland when built I remember had many protests about it going up at the time. I believe that Jewel was built around 1985. With people complaining about the Jewel being built on Milwaukee & Ashland, I would presume

There was a hot dog vendor with a home made wooden cart that would walk in front of the Brickyard Mall in the 1970's- mid 80's. The man had one arm and worked very hard. The Jewel Grand Bazarre was aware of this man selling hot dogs. So they forced him off the property of the Brickyard Mall. Then the gentlemen with the cart walked the sidewalk outside the perimeter of the mall with his hot dog car

Looking at many old photos in the Loop pre 1930 in books and online there are many restaurants with big signs that say Chop Suey. These were obvious Asian but never marked as Chinese, Thai etc. Anyone know the reason?
