Does anybody remember a man who preached with a bible in his hand standing on the corner of Rand and River Rd in Des Plaines? He stood at this corner for many years in the late 1960's thru early 80's. He stood on the median on the north side of River Rd. As a kid sitting in the back seat when driving by that location he would almost always be standing there preaching out loud. I was told he had an

Robert Taylor Homes, Stateway Gardens, Dearborn Homes & Harold Ickes Homes all ran from 22nd street to 54th Street. All of these four projects were between South State and South Federal. Looking at old aerial photo's before they were built sat many homes also some big buildings. My questions are is there anything on web referring to these areas before the housing projects were built or picture

If you consider baseball cards toys, I don't know? I was always a big baseball fan and watched the White Sox & Cubs on television. I knew almost every player on each team. But years back baseball cards were sold in grocery stores by the checkout where the candy was. National & A&P stores would have a box of Topp's baseball cards and my mom if in a good mood would buy me one pack. The p

So many memories of old Comiskey Park and in early years going with my dad. Later years going with cousins and other family. We usually liked to go too night games. Sometimes on Fridays when they had twinight double headers. the 2nd game may of ended after midnight. I remember the beer garden out in left field where you can sit right behind the screen by the left fielder. I also will never forget

I have come across houses in older neighborhoods usually 2 flats in Chicago that are in alleys. They sit behind the house that faces the street. Almost like a garage would in a alley but its actually a full size 2 flat. I came across one at 2315 West 47th Street. I really can't figure out? The only thing I could think of is back when it was built there were no codes and it was allowed. Maybe a fam

The Goldblatt's on Rand Rd. & Central in Mt. Prospect had a fire which destroyed the store in 1977. A Kmart replaced it. http://chicagoareafire.com/blog/2013/03/historic-fire-goldblatts-fire-in-mt-prospect-1977-pt1/

There was a lone grave on Willow Rd. in Northbrook. It sat on the north side of Willow Rd. It always amazed my Dad and I. Behind it was a open field at the time, 1970's. We pulled over one day to look at it and the birth was the late 1700's. Well the headstone is gone now with new development. I always wonder what they did with the grave when developing the land?

An old time Cubs fan told me he use to do this to get a free ticket. Himself and a friend would put up the seats then go walking picking up trash. He also told me at one time the Andy Frain ushers if the ballpark wasn't really crowded they let him in after the 6th inning. My own experience going as a youngster was my mother took me to Cubs games on Tuesdays because it was ladies day. All ladie

Thank you for the answer and it was a faint memory of mine having lunch up top with my mother. I also remember stores like Woolworth's having a rectangle candy counter with 2 women working. You would chose what candy you want and the amount. Then they would weigh the candy and bag it for you.

Remember Honey Bear Farm very well and it was owned by Carson Pirie Scott. It must be over 25 years since it closed. Ignatz & Mary's was a very popular restaurant at one time on Lake (Euclid) & Milwaukee Ave. I heard once the family decided to hang it up. The restaurant was on a popular corner and replaced by a hotel and a Dapper's Restaurant. Han's Bavarian Lodge in Wheeling was alway

I can remember in the Loop at many busy intersections like Jackson & State St., the corners had 4-5 telephone booths on at least 2 of the corners. Now there is 20 cell phones on every corner.

From what I remember pre mid 1970's all the Chicago street lights (Except the Yellow lights) were white. Many street lights were replaced to what they mostly have now.Orange sodium vapor lights because the light is actually brighter and the rays of light spread out more so people could see better at night. Many residents complained saying the new lights lit up their homes and caused light pollutio

Does anybody know the name of the former Funeral Home located at 2325 South California Ave.? Looks like it hasn't been a funeral home for many years. The trees are very over grown and you can't see the front of the building. I checked the Polk directory, 1940 census and the Tribune Archives and came up with no information. Thanks

There was a Dog N Suds in Lake Zurich Illinois on Route 12 that is now Papagus Gyros. 454 North Rand Road. I remember it well and the building now still looks like a Dog N Suds. Not meaning to get to far from Chicago but in Byron, Illinois there was a Dog N Suds at 705 West Blackhawk Drive. It is now Sam's Drive In. The building still has the root beer sign.
