I saw 2001 there. I watched it again on 12/31/2000 - still didn't get it. If you want to pay your respects to MT (actually Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen), he rests at N41.86421, W87.82324, just off Roosevelt Road in Forest Park.

I got "The History of Willow Springs 1892 - 1992" from the library. Very interesting anecdotes, pictures, maps and sketches of WS history. Includes Hall of 1000 Bargains and Spaitis, but nothing on the mystery cemetery.

Funny coincidence. Just watched the show on A&E called "Paranormal Cops." It was about sightings at the new "Stag's Head." Guess what that is - the old Spaitis Shady Tree Inn on Archer. The new owners have mentioned hearing weird sounds, etc. so they called in the "cops." You can view the show at: http://www.aetv.com/paranormal-cops/video/index.jsp?bcpid=6

"There is a modest horse fountain at the northern end of the cinder horse trail on the Evanston lakefront at Sheridan & Clark. It's now used as a flower planter." That is a Yerkes Fountain. See http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM48MR_Yerkes_Fountain_Evanston_IL for more info. The post refers to fountain that apparently was never built that actually was to look like a horse.

Thanks for all the followup. I think it would be cool to hike the old tracks to see what is up there, but wouldn't do that alone.

I was exploring Bronzeville and related south side sites recently and came across an old above ground level train right of way (heading east and west) at Vincennes and about 39th. No bridge over the street anymore though. So I kept driving around and found more pieces of this visible from S Lake Park, Drexel and Cottage Grove. Here's my google album of a few captioned pictures, including a goog

That would be the Green Mill (nightclub/lounge by that name still there) Garden. Garden part became converted to the theater and other buildings on the block.

Your post inspired me to do a little research. The man was Henry Graves. (He built the spooky monument in Graceland for his father Dexter.) Henry was one of the oldest residents of Chicago, and a horseman. I found an article in the Tribune archives dated 6/28/1909 entitled "Design for Henry Graves Fountain in Honor of the Old Racer "Ike Cook"". It includes a photo. (PM me

Add this one to your list - a crime thriller about Chicago called "Chicago Syndicate" (1955). It's a film-noir B-movie, but the plot was entertaining and the 50's Chicago scenes were terrific. The movie kicks off with a murder of a mob accountant who gave inside info to a newspaper man, and of course the "Syndicate" didn't like that. The newsman then gets some leading Chicag

I was biking the Prairie Path through Maywood when I noticed a small building at 1300 - 1400 S. 5th ave. with a "Winged Wheel" logo on it. I have to believe it was for a car dealership or gas station. Any one recognize this? <table style="width:194px;"><tr><td align="center" style="height:194px;background:url(http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/tr

It seems some older topics are missing - like Municipal Device and some things on the forest preserves in the western suburbs, Midway area, etc. Was it intentional to delete these?

FYI I'm not using Flickr, I'm using Picasaweb on Google. I fixed my post by eliminating the tags. Also figured out the right links to view both my folder of pics as well as any pic in general.

I grew up near the lake in the 60s and used to go to Montrose Beach all the time. There was a radar station there with a weird shaped visible revolving radar that used to emit a sinister hum. A bit to the south near Belmont Harbor was the Nike missle battery. Every now and then (perhaps when the threat condition for invading Canadians went up a notch) they would raise the missles so they were v

90. DeMars
I noticed on your "more things change" page the photo of an old DeMars Coffee shop. Ironically, you also have a photo of the old Marigold marquee on the same page. Ironic because there was another DeMars right around the corner from the Marigold on Broadway just north of Grace. Used to go there for breakfast after church on Sundays as a kid. They had those jukebox things at every tab
