I worked across the street at an electronics company on Clark part-time while in high school. Foot Longs at Franksville were a treat for lunch in the summer!

I too have taken an interest in the area. It just seems so tragic to compare this once vibrant community to what it became. A couple of good books to read are: "Bronzeville" by Maren Stange and "Kings:the true story of Chicago's policy kings and numbers racketeers:an informal history" by Nathan Thompson. For the later also see http://www.policykings.com/

I didn't see any mention of old Kroger's locations. I believe there was one where the Walgreen's is now on Marine Dr. at about 4600 N.

Just finished reading it. Very enjoyable. I am a northsider transplanted to the western suburbs and thus have been driving Ogden for the past several years on voyages back the the city. Your book has added a great deal to my understanding of the area. Since I pass the spot on every trip, I really enjoyed learning about the old Orvis mansion location. Intend to venture down Millard on next tri

I am always amazed/pleased when FC posts something quirky that I happen to like too. I have a little collection of sidewalk stamp photos! RE: "The undated clover-shaped Simpson brass plaque does well at indicating the ethnic identity of the company, but is confusing otherwise. Located on Morse Avenue east of Sheridan, it is undated and reads “Trademark Reg.- Laid by Simpson Bros. – C

They are doing road work on Lincoln N of Foster, maybe around Bryn Mawr. Two days ago you could see very good re-exposed old rail tracks in the center of the street. Didn't have a camera, darn! Won't last long.

My original quest was to see if the art deco Lady Esther plant at 7171 W. 65th and the National Aluminate plant at 6221 West 66th Place (see http://snuffy.lib.umn.edu/image/srch/bin/Dispatcher?mode=600&id=atcB3659c) were still there. When I got to the first location, I saw what looked like the same shaped building, but covered now with a new reddish brick exterior. I then tried to get to the

Some further digging: Jerry Zito died 8/20/1941. His obit lists him as the head of an undertaking firm at 1624 Grand. He was 42. Survived by widow and 4 daughters. Funeral at Holy Rosary. Annually for a few years the family posted a memoriam in the Obit section. In Aug 1944, they had a mass celebrated at St. Columbkille's.

I dug into the Trib archives. The address shows up as a funeral home (chapel), being featured in numerous obituaries. In the 60's - 80's the name was the Zito Funeral Home. Alan

I found a 10/2/1897 Tribune article about a devastating fire in Willow Springs that lists John Zenk's business as saloon, blacksmith shop and livery stable. He suffered $7000 damage in the fire.
