That's good to know. One would think the assessor's office would be the most accurate, but this is Chicago!

Thanks--I actually started there, but when I tried to confirm some of the dates on the buildings on the CityNews Chicago website, they didn't match. CityNews had some of them from the 1880s.

Can anyone point me to resources regarding the architect Hermann von Holst? He took over Frank Lloyd Wright's practice while FLW was in Europe with Mamah Cheney. He also designed at least 29 prairie style substations for Commonwealth Edison. I am especially interested in anything dealing with his time working for ComEd. Thanks.

Dunning1--thanks for pointing me to the Google book. Now I'm obsessed! Love the advertising especially and located a few buildings that are still standing.

Can anyone tell me the history of this building? It looks quite old and is huge with immense doors. Did it have something to do with the railroad?

I'm curious to know about the history of Fifth Avenue, which runs diagonally between Cicero and California, starting roughly at Cicero and Roosevelt. I know it used to be called Colorado Avenue. Why the name change to Fifth when there is not 4th or 6th? Why this random diagonal street on the West Side?

Anyone know the early history of this building? I know it was used as studio space for bands recently, but I haven't been able to find out what it was originally. It's a beautiful old building probably on its way to demolition.

Google streetview doesn't show anything at 3006 W. Fulton. Could the substation have been torn down?

I am trying to locate and photograph all the electrical substations designed by architect Hermann von Holst. One of these is/was supposedly located at 4006 W. Fulton. I drove there today and Fulton doesn't appear to exist in the 4000 block. Can anyone give me any insight about this? Thanks.

You're right about the address. It is 3005. Anyway, I found an old photo and it looks quite a bit different with actual windows instead of bricked up openings.

Does anyone know where I can find a photograph of Frank Lloyd Wright's E-Z Polish Factory (3004 W. Carroll) in its original condition? I saw the building today and it has been severely altered. I'd love to see what it looked like originally.

I found mention of the building first as Mayfair Grammar School, then Mayfair Junior College, then the Irish Cultural Center.

I drove by the Irish American Heritage Center yesterday--such an impressive building. I gather that it used to be a school. Does anyone what the school's name was or anything else about the building's history?

Also saw him at the Cardinal's mansion. People kept cheering and he finally motioned that he was tired and had to go to sleep!

Is there a directory of Chicago Public School buildings and the years in which they were built? I've seen so many gorgeous buildings but am having trouble finding out historical information about them.
