IL Tollway is building a ring road there and also extending Elgin-Ohare to actually meet Ohare! The new bridge is being used, and I am sure the other track will get raised.

Well, the city was growing and a common address system was needed, to get mail, police, fire, etc. Robey was renamed Damen, as Crawford to Pulaski to honor of someone. However nowadays, this would never fly, city streets almost never change names. Lawsuits and costs, etc. So, we get the brown 'Honorary' street signs. But, they do confuse tourits!

The eastern portion of Kolze's land was made into a sub-division of coach houses, just across Melvina av. from St. Pascals church. Here, Merrimac ave curves to Mobile, it's like a small town.

I grew up near the Patio, and never heard anything about 'people who touch kids' ever. We went all the time and never heard any such incidents. However, back then I never would imagine Patio still being open and Will Rogers torn down!

In the 70's on the 5900 block of Irving Park, near Austin, 2 small groceries co-existed for awhile. One was a Certified store, The Boulevard, and across IP was a Centrella shop, T&C. I'd walk to T&C mostly since I couldn't cross IP by myself until 12. But the stores were still around until mid 80's. T&C closed by then, and Boulevard is now just a small convienience store, no Certifi

I read the little newspaper clipping and Brennan did say that State and Madison was commonly used as a 'referance point for directions, so use it for the base lines'.

The Elmhurst Hi-Lo turned to Kohls Grocery in '75, then Eagle, and Dominick's. Building was torn down for a new Dominick's a few blocks away. Now, site is a Kohl's Dept store.

State st was designated as Chicago's 'Main St', for the central business district when city was planned. Back in 1830's there were no address numbers at all. As for why is Madison divider N-S, that is a good question. It's posible that State and Madison just happened to be busiest intersection by 1900's, so was picked as Ground 0.

I remember the Laramie one, was fairly new in mid 60's, near some 1950's era blonde brick homes on W. Gladys ave.

Yeah Musicworks* was a huge store, back when vinyl LP's ruled. Not to be confused with 'Rolling Stones records' nearby. The TV/radio ads had 'electronic' jingle fo 'Musicworks'. It opened in 1979 and didn't last long before it became another Musicland** branch by 1981 or so? The space was cut down, too, and was not 'cool' anymore. *I honestly don't remember the actual spelling, was it reall

I remember the low budget TV ads that ran on Ch 9 and 32, from Midwest Carpets. Had pic of kids and background voice was "Come on gang, let's have a snack!". My cousin and I used to make fun of the local commercials, as young teens. "OMG I hate that one!" and parody the voiceovers. One of other local 'love to hate' commercials was for Creative Mirror, when mirrored wal

Just some things to point out: Piggly Wiggly has a store in Grayslake IL. Also, some of the stores were just renamed, not out of business, like Galyans is now Dicks. SS Kresge is now K Mart. And, Food 4 Less is a branch of Kroger, selling Kroger badged merchandise.

City should have been more aggressive in annexing land after WW2, could have had Rosemont and even Elk Grove or Schaumburg.

Kohls sold their IL grocery stores to Dominicks around 1980? Store at Central and Addison was Mayflower, Kohl's Dominicks, then torn down a few years ago for one of many CVS's.

The Certified grocery at Irving Park and Mason had teenagers delivering in a Chevy wagon. They drove somewhat recklessly and their cars always had dents. Now, stores probably have adult drivers not 'showing off' in the streets.

The Chicago Skyway in the mid 70's was another hot spot. It was little used then, due to toll price, and since Calumet 'freeway' opened . Wasn't until NW Indiana Borman Expy traffic got so bad that drivers started using Skwy more to avoid it.
