Mentioned in other threads is the long gone Marshall Square hobbies on Cermak near Marshall Blvd. A tiny little basement shop. There was a hand picture in the window, I assume operated by electric eye, when you put your hand over it a little train ran in a circle. The proprietors were kindly Rose and Grumpy Al. BTW Al's Hobby's in Elmhurst closed last May after 67 years in business.

I found this obituary for Jim Stewart http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2001-04-03/news/0104030282_1_mr-stewart-puppets-lee-stewart In addition to "Here's Geraldine". he also hosted 'Passage to Adventure". a travel show with homemade movies filmed by locals. I was surprised to see it ran for 12 years.

The Chicago Museum of broadcasting had an entire episode of "The Susan Show" online. Now I can't find it. However you tube has a 5 minute excerpt of the show. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i08fCLurn-g I know one of the WBBM newsmen was the voice of MR. Pegasus, the talking table. I think it was John Coughlin, the weatherman . HOLTANEK, this may be the show

Talk about forgotten Chicago. I was watching a PBS documentary about the National Barn Dance. As old as I am I had no idea that this thing ran for 30 years and was the forerunner to the Grand Ole Opry. I do remember a Saturday show that WLS TV ran some times in the 60s. The Host was Bob Atcher, then the mayor of Schaumburg. I was particulary curious about the 8th st Theater,on Wabash, where

In 1969 someone opened a Subaru dealership on the NW corner of Cermak and Western. They displayed two of the smallest cars I'd ever seen . They were the first Japanese cars I ever saw in this country, outside of a Godzilla movie. Does anyone recall the name of the Pontiac dealership located between Kedzie and Albany on the north side of Ogden Avenue? My Dad bought our first car, a 61 Catalina b

I worked for the Sears catalog division at Midway in the 70s. When I started you could put in a paper order in the morning and have it ready for pickup in the afternoon, even if it came from another warehouse like Homan ave. Around 1972 they computerized their operation,it then took a minimum of 3 days to get your order.

Thanks Frank. I should have been clearer, I wish I had a photo of the neon sign. I wonder if Comed has an archive. Also I wonder who put up the various Neon signs throughout the city. They must have taken pictures. That would be a treasure trove. Another memory is the Hannah and Hogg neon sign high on their distillery on Kedzie.

Directly east of the California manufacturing building,on the Northwest corner of Troy was a small rendering plant. The smell was horrible. I lived on the east side of Troy in 1961-1962. The building address was in the 2220s and was one of the ones torn down for the school. Many of the two flats on east side of Troy only had a back entrance for the second story apartments. The city started e

I wonder if there's a decent color picture of that building with the turtle attached. I'm surprised I've never run across a postcard. I read somewhere that the turtle changed color with the weather.

We lived across the street from a building we always called the brewery. It was at 21st pl and Albany. They never made beer when I lived there and eventually it became a factory for those 55 gallon drums, ubiquitous to Chicago alleyways. I recently found out it was named Garden City Brewery, they stopped brewing in 1951. Here is a link to their brands. <a HREF="http://www.taverntro

The first International Trade Fair was at Navy Pier in 1959. It inaugurated the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. I suppose they were at Navy Pier, because that was a commercial port. My family went to that fair, and I was pretty impressed with it. The fair was divided by country displaying their national products. There were lots of new foreign cars displayed,

We had some sort of distribution point for Sinclair Oil on Cermak, either on Rockwell or Western Ave. I remember the green trucks with the dinosaur logo. I remember the Oklahoma stations with the large squarish clocks on a Oklahoma billboard type sign . At night the sign was so bright it blacked out everything around it.. Here's an example at Cermak and Clark. Note that the red has faded to ora

My Parish was St Casimir, The church survives albeit renamed to Our Lady of Tepayec. Poor St Ludmila's church was torn down, but the school survives ,however, also renamed to Our Lady of Tepayac. I was poking around the internet looking for information for Emil Denemark Cadillac they were originally located at 3860 W. Ogden Ave.(Cermak and Pulaski, phone Crawford 7-4100 ) and moved to 4646 S Pulaski Rd I was curious because Emil Denemark advertised on his own Radio Station which played mostly ethic programming.
