I doubt it's the traffic, I live on North Ave which sees a lot more heavy trucks. There is a worn Elec vault cover that the westbound bus hits every half hour at night. It rings my building like a bell and I don't see that much trouble. Frankly, that block of Kedzie is much less potholed than the same one on California. They're on the fringe of the 1872 corps of engineers map, but it shows it a

I've seen the mark on photos before, but don't know where they were. I tried to check around but came up with bupkis. Other than that they seem to have been a big player in that sort of burlesque lobby card photo. Perhaps Rustymuscle's 1950 phone book, or perhaps advertisements in old issues of Variety.

Ellis S. Chesbrough who figured out how to raise the streets so the sewers would work. As well as Pullman, Brown, Hollingsworth and all the other engineers who figured out how to jack up the buildings to match.

1935 Sanborn map lists it as apartments built in 1928. Just some wacky architecture.

According to the 1906 Sanborn map these were apartments. The Historic resources survey also lists its original use as multiple dwellings.

How old is the sign? In the twenties there was a road house by that name around Mannheim & St Charles. In the forties, there was a tavern and trailer park by the same name at Roosevelt and Wolf.

My building, ca 1909, was built when electricity was new fangled. So was indoor plumbing and central heat. All the ceiling boxes had a gas pipe in the center and rigid conduit around. The building meter had a line to a manifold on the basement wall. I was checking the lines and opened one of the valves. The gas meter started whirring like a helicopter. When I tracked it down, the third

Ya, but his water tower isn't there any more. It is an extremely cool atrium apartment building, though.

If you check the Plat maps, they show some of the old rights of way. Where the road bends at at the tracks, it used to travel in a straight line. It also used to go west of Cicero with a bend to the northwest at least as far as Lavergne but that was vacated in 1956. (as far as the map goes) It is along the abandoned ROW of the "Old St. Charles Air Line RR" which I suspect shoul

A quick check of the Plat maps showed that it has been there a long time (A on the subdivisions list). It also shows that it was called Barry Point Road (as well as Colo.) Early home Chicago turns up this: Barry Point Trail also Berry Point Trail. One of the major Indian trails of early Chicago, it left the Chicago settlement in a west-southwestern direction, passed the point – nine miles f

There was a neighborhood zoo at Indian Boundary park(Rockwell & Lunt), but no trails and not much in the way of woods. I suspect that you are thinking of the the Hal Tyrrell Trailside Museum. Somewhat farther south (Chicago & Thatcher) in River Forest. They used to care for injured wildlife and always had chicken wire cages of wacky animals. You would park by the Thatcher Woods pi

Can't speak for the '70s I moved into wickerbuck parktown around '83. Back then, the nearest supermarket was that Jewel. A few years later they opened the Jewel at Milw and Division. It was a shorter walk.

The more I think about it the more I think your right about the Jewel Osco being up at Washtenaw, I think they tore down the Osco building and made the parking lot bigger. Perhaps the Osco operation moved down to Maplewood where the CVS is now

The Jewel Osco I remember (1980's) was farther down at Maplewood. I used to buy my groceries there when I lived on Damen. They tore it down and rebuilt it as just an Osco. The 1938 aerial has the same footprint right down to the clipped corner on Lyndale at the alley, but in both of those shots, it's hard to tell if it is a building or a fence. The Congress wasn't built until '26 I think.
