I was there the day of the IC crash (I was 11). There were gurnees lining the corridors everywhere. As for tearing it down, hospital buildings are incredibly expensive to repurpose and without any interested parties to take on the project (and the city's competing motives to free up the land) demolition was the easiest choice.
