I was there the day of the IC crash (I was 11). There were gurnees lining the corridors everywhere. As for tearing it down, hospital buildings are incredibly expensive to repurpose and without any interested parties to take on the project (and the city's competing motives to free up the land) demolition was the easiest choice.

Fluky's or Vienna-branded fluorescent green relish and sport peppers. For that matter Vienna hot dogs (should survive a car trip). And even our old (non-Jewish) neighbors who relocated to Arizona get nostalgic for Romanian Kosher salami.

The Library of Congress has 45 images of 1949 Chicago taken by Stanley Kubrick. Although many are photos of people, there are a few cool exterior shots as well as a Board of Trade interior. http://www.loc.gov/search/?q=kubrick+stanley&fa=subject%3Achicago&c=80&st=gallery

Just watched the first episode of teh Foo Fighters' "Sonic Highways" on HBO. They go to a different city each week to explore the musical influences of the local scene. The first episode covered Chicago and had a brief segment on Wax Trax including a brief appearance by Julia Nash, the daughter of co-founder Jim Nash. It also covered the punk scene at the Cubby Bear, a segment on Nake

Marvin Glass & Associates? They had that infamous massacre there years ago. I remeber the Reader did a fascinating cover story about the business and how generally secretive and high stress the toy design world was.

Virginia Dare indeed. I went to day camp and my mom packed a brown bag lunch with a can of soda (and a church key, which would now be banned).

One on Devon, West of California in Rogers park. I don't have many memories of grocery shopping as a child (we frequented A&P more often that High Low, but I remember my mom letting me pick flavors from the various loose cans (pre pull-tabs) of no-name pop in the displays just inside the entrance.

We had Zfaney's Pharmacy at Kimball and Lawrence. It was a convenience store/pharmacy with a full soda fountain. You could buy phosphates at price points around a dime (I think it was like 7cents, 9cents and 12cents depending on the size). The owner seemed really old to us (we were in elementary school in the late 60's) but was probably in his 50's-60's at the time and we used to drive him craz
